Tilt Steering Column. How do you get this thing apart?!?
I've taken the tilt steering column out of my '72 Chevy pickup. I want to replace the turn signal switch and general clean the rest of it up.
The question, though, is how do I get the switch out? I have the steering wheel off and am down to the plate that sits just above the turn signal switch. I can see that there is a very thin nut that appears to need to come off in order to cotinue disassembly. Help!!! What size is this nut and what kind of socket does it take to get it off? Or does it even need to come off? Thanks in advance for any (and all) help... as long as it doesn't involve using a bigger hammer.

Man, I don't remember there being a nut on top of mine. Just loosen the screws in the turn signal housing, and it should lift out. Of course the springs are going to shoot out too, but you should be able to pull it straight up. Make sure you take out the screw on the hazard knob as well. If there is a nut, it should be 3/4 like the one that holds your wheel on. Let us know if its different. Jeff.

That thin nut is your bearing adjustment. It doesn't need to come off. I think if you remove the tilt and turn sig. levers the upper housing will come off.(it is just a press fit and will tap off) then remove three screws and the switch will come out. I think thats it, its been a few years. Good luck John
