Big block choke spring question

My choke spring doesn't seem quite strong enough to pull the assembly down into full choke & high idle when cold, so I ordered a new one.

In short, big block ones pull down when cold and small block ones push up.

Oddly, though, my old one pulled down at the back - the spring opening in the little cover was at the rear, towards the firewall. The new one was clearly intended to go towards the front. So that's how I set it up.

My question is what's original - is the little square opening in the choke coil cover toward the front or rear?

This picture is how it was when I received the truck. The new piece says it's for both passenger car and truck.

Re: Big block choke spring question

Anyone? I went outside and adjusted the rod yesterday, had to lengthen it slightly by bending it to get it such that when it's fully down the rod just comes to the bottom of the choke hole when closed - that's what the shop manual says to do, as a I read it.

But it'd be a little silly if I got it all perfectly adjusted backwards, so would really like a pic or info from someone with an original BB truck!

Re: Big block choke spring question

C'mon, if I own the only somewhat original big block on this forum I should win a prize. But I don't want a prize, I want a picture of a choke coil on a big block!

I refuse to believe there are none, which means you guys are just slacking and going on to the next thread ;-)

I don't even need a picture. Just a single bit (literally) of information - opening forward or backwards?

Re: Big block choke spring question

Never! It's a weird thrill to me to make the old stuff work as it was designed. I have an electric conversion on my B-Body but want this to work like it can and should!

I did indeed get the glass in (well, a local installer did), looks great.
