Upgrade to later model steering pump?
Hey all,
So I have a mid-80s power steering box mounted that uses metric fittings. I to shift how my power steering pump is mounted a bit, and install a new pulley. I figure if I'm going through the trouble I'll swap in a new pump, since this one has been on there for a long time. Would I be able to get a pump from the same generation that would use metric fittings as well so I could use new stock lines, or would I have issues mounting it to the Gen I SBC? Thanks all! |

I don't quite understand your question. Are you wanting to change to a type 2 pump?

I think he wants to swap to a metric pump. You really don't have to. The part where the power steering line screws into can be changed to a metric fitting. Watch out as there is a spring behind it.

Re: Upgrade to later model steering pump?
Fleetside explained it more clearly. Essentially if I'm getting a new pump anyways, is there any drawback into getting a metric one so that I don't need to change threads in the box to standard, and can just use regular metric lines.

Metric box will be the same. Just check it against your current box. Might have to have a long pump if you don't already. I'm not sure about that though,.
It would be nice to know though.

Why not just install a rebuild kit in yours? I think the last kit I bought was less than $20.

Re: Upgrade to later model steering pump?
If you want a pump with a Metric hose fitting, you simply need a pump for a small block from about '81 up to about '87. If your current pump is in good condition, you can also just change the pressure fitting in the back of the pump. Of course you will have to source the fitting from another pump.

Re: Upgrade to later model steering pump?
Not really sure if my pump is in good condition or not since I haven't driven the truck in 10 years. Thanks for the tips all. I'll just pick one up with the proper fittings already installed. They're not too expensive, and I'd rather just do it than to get it all together and discover the pump isn't working.
