68 c20 396 help
Hi all, I am new to the 67-72 crowd, just picked up very nice 68 3/4 2wd 396 air pickup, I have some questions if anyone feels like helping, have power brakes but want discs, will 71 3/4 2wd spindles, and brakes work? are ball joints and tie rod ends same? Other problem is cam going flat, I want to ditch quadra jet and manifold anyway, will probably pick up carb, manifold and cam set from Edelbrock, and maybe springs and have a valve job done all at same time, what heads came stock on 68 396? And will I get the cam in and out without taking grill out? It doesnt look like any fun. Thanks in advance.

396 sweet welcome to the board. Sorry I have a 4x4 and can't help with your suspension questions. But there are several people that can answer your questions.

The ball joints and tie rod ends are all different than in the 68. This doesn't mean you can't use the stuff though, you just have to install 71-72 ball joints and use all of the steering linkages to do the swap. WES www.ClassicHeartbeat.com

Welcome... and let me know what you wanna do with that quadrajet, Might want it If I decide to go back to Gas in my propane unit... also let me know what happens when you use the new manifold... perhads some of your AC brackets off the manifold wont work with the new manifold and you have to get a couple different types from one of the suppliers... Im missing a few assorted BB ac brackets. Rod

Cam help. Yes the cam will come out with the grill installed. Welcome to the board. I have a 396 I'll be putting in my 4x4 over the winter. Once you have the heads off, it's very little work to remove the cam. Just the front cover, and timing chain with sprockets. It's probably time for a new chain anyway, so you can take care of all of it at the same time. Have a friend help with the cam removal/install by holding it up with a heavy piece of wire to keep the cam lobes centered in the bushings. Letting it fall, and dragging it to the next bearing journal can gouge the soft cam bearings, causing loss of oil pressure to the lifters. Good Luck, and remember to have fun with it!!!
