68 GMC SWB Stepside build.

While this is little late coming I wanted to show how this project is turning out. I picked this up in Wyo last yr. After hauling it home it's time to tear it down. Before that though I had a little fun with it as it was a driver. It was setup with a 383 Stroker, Saginaw 4 speed and the factory 307 gears, it was fun to drive.
The plan is LQ4, Torquer V2 232/234 .595"/.598" Camshaft Fresh 799 heads, 4L60e/Yank 3200 stall converter, upgrade the rearend to posi w/410 gears.

Here's starting to disassemble the truck. It's in fair shape.

With the body off it sure is easy to clean up the frame. I chose Eastwood chassis paint. I like that you can spray it or brush it on. The new fuel tank looks awesome and fits perfect.

Re: 68 GMC SWB Stepside build.

I located a LQ4 with 130k miles that I purchased. I was happy to hear it run before hand. I tore down to a short block and changed the gaskets, cleaned then painted it. I also found a rebuilt 4L60e built to stage 2, a set of fresh 799 casting heads I just needed to change to .650 lift springs.

Re: 68 GMC SWB Stepside build.

While I started this build 10 months ago, I'll fast forward a little. Fitting the cab and front clip. New wheels and wiring harness.

Re: 68 GMC SWB Stepside build.

Limited on space I'm painting the bed separate. It turned out pretty nice. After color sanding and buffing it really shines!!!

The bed is next to get painted and put back on. Man it's sure coming together. After reading all of the other builds I'm excited to almost be done with this.

Here's a short video of it running. I enjoy the open headers.

Started installing the wood floor. I really like how the wood looks in these beds. The fuel door was pretty easy to install and looks great!!!

Re: 68 GMC SWB Stepside build.

Closing in on a yr into this project and I'm happy it's soooo close to being finished. I built it for my Aunt and I think she'll be very happy with how it handles and drives. While I know it's a little over kill on the HP lol (the thing is a beast and hard on tires) it's such an awesome cruiser though!!!! She'll love it for her daily summer driver! More pics to come when it's completed 100%.

Re: 68 GMC SWB Stepside build.

Finally I was able to get it on the Dyno. The engine is 2002 LQ4 133k short block, rebuilt 799 heads with .650 lift springs, Crane Texas Speed Torquer V2 232/234 .595"/.598" Camshaft Standard 112 LSA, shorty headers, 2.5 exhaust thru flow masters and H Pipe. Stage 2 4L60e, 3200 Yank Stall, 410 rear gears.

My best rwhp was 373 but Shane dialed it back for drivability, so out the door it's 369.92 rwhp / 360.69 rwtq. Totally worth the upgrade.

Re: 68 GMC SWB Stepside build.

Thanks. I've done the powertrain and chassis (tho I want to add R&P steering and go to air springs in the rear) just never did the body and paint, and will probably include some extras for interior. Someday....tapped outfitting shop with lift and other helpful tools.
