Highest ratio gears usable??

I would like to change my ring and pinion to higher (lower numerically) ratio. I have a 350-300 hp with auto. Truck is almost never used for hauling and winds a lot on highway. I think it has 4:11s now.
Anybody change theirs with success?

Re: Highest ratio gears usable??

3:08s is what most these trucks came with stock. A lot of guys like 3:73's, give a little more umph off the line but doesn't send your rev's through the roof. I have 3:73's in my truck and love em.

Re: Highest ratio gears usable??

I have 3.73's in my 4x4, but if I were driving a lot of highway miles over 55mph, I'd probably look into a set of 3.42's.

Yeah I agree, I have seen 3:42s offered and as long as it wouldn't make the automatic trans take forever to shift, I'm going to do it!

Re: Highest ratio gears usable??

You don't mention your tire size. That's a critical component in determining what your final drive ratio will be.

Re: Highest ratio gears usable??

I put 3.42's in mine and with OD it works well on the interstate. If you have 4.11's now, you will have to change your carrier to a 3 series carrier. Someone else can chime in on that one...

This is a good reference showing tire size, gear ratio and expected use/results.

Re: Highest ratio gears usable??

Because as the pinion gear gets smaller the ring gear mounting on the differential case has to move over.

Re: Highest ratio gears usable??

Tire size is important, agreed. What do you have OP?

Think I've got a 235/70/15 along with 3.08's. Allows me to cruise at 70mph no problem.

you can get an adjustable modulator valve and change the shift points but it should be fine

as the gear ratio goes up or down the size of the gears go up or down so the carrier needs to get sized to fit the ring gear series 4 carrier does 373 to 411 or higher and series 3 carrier goes from 308 to 342 . I can never remember witch but one set wont fit the carrier at all and the other set will slide down the carrier but the bolt holes will be way off
