Alternator bracket for a 270
I am wanting to upgrade my trucks generator to an alternator but I can't find any brackets that fit my engine.
Anyone have a clue where to buy a 270 alternator bracket? I was told that the 235 bracket wouldn't fit mine which confused me because I thought it would work but apparently not Thanks in advance

Re: Alternator bracket for a 270
On 235 engines I have used the stock generator bracket with an alternator by using a long bolt that will go in from the front and go though both ends of the bracket with the alternator slipped on that bolt and a cut to fit spacer between it and the back bracket. We had to do a bit of changing on the adjustment arm but it wasn't too difficult.
The only rub is that you don't have an extreme amount of adjustment and have to pick a belt that just fits with the alternator tight to the block so you can tighten it enough. One of our sometimes members builds brackets for the 216,236 and 261 and then for the 194,230,250 and 292 but he doesn't show anything for .

Re: Alternator bracket for a 270
I was just cruising on EBay for GMC 302 and saw an alt bracket mod listed for $69. So should fit the 270 as well.

Re: Alternator bracket for a 270
That is made by the member I mentioned in post 2 that makes the Chevy six brackets.
Put this in the ebay search. 222134108924 You do have to have to have the right casting on the block as he points out.

Re: Alternator bracket for a 270
You're correct, you must have a 1954 engine or earlier. The later ones seem to have side engine mounts and his bracket claims not to fit them. That's spelled out in his EBay listing. So, guess it would depend on the year of his 270.
Good luck |

My engine is a 59
So I bought an alternator and a wiring harness for nothing now

Re: Alternator bracket for a 270
When I was running the 261 Inline 6 in my 59, I just modified the generator bracket to fit an alternator. Just get the appropriate alternator and align the pulleys. This was before I owned a welder, so extensive fabrication skills are definitely not required. Just get the parts and look at it and figure it out. This is a good learning experience. One of the first modifications I made to my truck years ago.

Re: Alternator bracket for a 270
I have to think that you are making this way harder than it has to be or actually is.
You should not have to buy a special bracket to mount the alternator. At least try the suggestion I posted in post 2. That is the under 5.00 fix and I have done it several times on 235 engines. The only hard part is that you may have to modify or come up with the adjustment bracket and you will most likely have to get a new belt and figure out what size belt you need. Looking at Mog797's 59 270 it looks like you can make it work rather easily The top bracket will probably need to be more curved but at least give it a go and quit trying to make every step so blasted hard when it doesn't have to be. True he has a bit more room between the engine and the inner fender than you do but you still should have plenty.

Re: Alternator bracket for a 270
Not the best picture, but you can see how I extended the top bracket with a piece of flat metal and two bolts. This was done 20 years ago when I was 17 with a drill and a hacksaw.
After I got the pulleys aligned, I cut a piece of string to measure how long of a belt that I needed and went down to the parts store to find a belt that was the right length. I ran it this way up until 3 years ago when I yanked it out for the 327/auto swap.
