RPM Tachometer Installation
Can anyone help me out,
I just purchase a new dash bezel and I added a 8000 rpm tachometer my question is on the instruction it shows how to install the tachometer using a coil but not with a HEI dist it says that the tachometer will work with a HEI dist but will need to purchase a tachometer adapter this tachometer only have a 2 wire plug coming off the back of the tachometer what is the correct way to install this tachometer using the adapter. I'm not sure if one wire go to the fuse block for power and one wire go to the dist. Thanks, |

Re: RPM Tachometer Installation
Tach needs to be wired to the ignition for power. Grounded too.... and it needs to read off of the HEI. You can buy a plug for an HEI at the auto parts store that has two wires and plugs to the TACH port in HEI. Hell even a hardware store may have it, it's a common type plug.

Re: RPM Tachometer Installation
Hey,
thanks for the quick reply forgive me I am a bit green at this but if I purchase the adapter with the 2 wires and I plug it in to the dist one wire from the plug goes to the tachometer were do the other wire go if I use power from the ignition the tachometer appears to be grounded from the from the bezel because there are only a 2 wire plug coming off the tachometer as well |

Re: RPM Tachometer Installation
The HEI has two wires on it's connector:
RED - Power White - Tach You hook that white TACH output to the TACH (or Coil) input of the tach. That's all.

Re: RPM Tachometer Installation
Those instructions must suck. Who makes the tach and instructions?

Re: RPM Tachometer Installation
Your HEI Dizzy has two connection points on it as stated above. If you look on the top of the Dizzy cap they are labeled BAT, TACH.
Bat- Will need power from a keyed power source, I actually ran my ignition system through a 40amp relay which sort of guarantees me max voltage to the Dizzy resulting in the best achievable spark. Tach- this terminal supplies the "Tach" reading to your actual tach gauge. ACCEL makes a plug that they sell at Pepboys or oriellys autoparts that will plug straight into the Dizzy. If your tach only has two wires I will assume that one will connect to the tach terminal on your dizzy and the other will have to be connected to the a ignition power source. I am not sure what model truck you have but on my 68 there is a terminal on the fuse block that you can get 12v keyed from. Make sure to incorporate a fuse between the fuse block and the tach. I assume that if there is no third wire that it grounds through the body so make sure you are mounting it keeping that in mind. |
