So I guess POR15 has a good Heat Rating of more than 1200 deg?

Re: Painting Stock Exhaust Manifolds

I had a buddy who worked at an airport hangar, and he managed to get my exhaust manifold, for another car, aluminized. A really durable and good looking coating, made the engine compartment look very "detailed", and never needed any work for over 20 years.

Re: Painting Stock Exhaust Manifolds

My dad used to work at Appalachian stove and would get me some spray paint called stove bright that they painted the wood stoves with. I would wire brush the manifolds, wipe them down with lacquer thinner, let it dry for a couple hours, spray 2 or 3 light coats....not too heavy, just full coverage. Stuff lasted for years with daily driving, only minimal touch up from time to time. Use a curing process to finish it off by firing the engine up and bring the manifold up to about 250-300 degrees, let cool and repeat a couple times for best longevity. You can still buy it off the web for about 10 bucks a can last time I bought it. Stuff smells wicked so I don't think it's simply common paint. Beautiful metallic cast iron finish too!

Re: Painting Stock Exhaust Manifolds

Cast grey color is what you want if wanting the correct "new" look. The POR and Eastwood products give you that. Eastwood offers quality stuff that is more expensive than their equivalent, if you know where to find it. In other words, the company that makes the paint. I find it at major swap meets. I never used the POR product but the Eastwood stuff works great. Sandblasting is the key to success for whatever way you go. There is ceramic coating but that's a silver, stainless looking color. VHT is actually good stuff, again, over sandblasted surface.

Re: Painting Stock Exhaust Manifolds

I painted the stock manifolds on my 69 more than 20 years ago with the stuff that Eastwood sells. They still look good.

Re: Painting Stock Exhaust Manifolds

Would any or all of these coatings also work OK on my headers as well? They definitely need a cleaning up and made to look better.

Following. I cleaned my brand new headers and sprayed them with VHT 2000 deg paint. I cured them by starting and warming them to harden the paint. They looked good for a couple months, but are now starting to flake off.
It would be great if the POR paint would work, but I think the steel gets too hot, and won't dissipate the heat like the cast iron manifolds.

Re: Painting Stock Exhaust Manifolds

Thanks, yeah, I could see that. Perhaps I will just need to add better headers to the check list. Mine run down and collect down by the transmission area, so I take it those are long tube?
