Why not just use the fill hole on the side of the differential?

I should say I did look for one a few years back, but never really found any that were less than $150.

There is weld in and bolt in bungs with a plug you could put on a stock cover if you don't want a fancy cover. Same deal for a trans pan.

I installed an LPW cover today. Man it is beefy! The flange is 9/16" thick. Really cool piece.

Well it was stripped out when I got to it. I tried my best to get it out using hand tools and nothing. I had someone weld a bolt to it and it snapped off while trying to turn it. Weird turn of events but I've decided to fill and drain from this nifty new cover. I never-siezed the bolts of course.

Nice looking piece. And not real spendy.
But how would you add gear oil if the driverside fill plug on the differential was not usable? I see a well placed drain plug on the bottom, but no way to top fill.
Just roll the truck over on its roof, fill it, and roll it back, right? [lol]

There is a top fill plug in the diff housing. No need for another fill plug in the top of the cover. No need to flip the truck on it's roof.

I know. But that wouldn't help the OP, who had to grind off his OEM fill plug.

I think he means the cover. Not housing. It's right under the rib halfway up

That must have been a cheap plumbing plug that broke off ? I think the female 3/8 drive is sunk deeper than flush. I have rounded them out and welded a bolt to get them out, but never had one break off. I replace them with a brass plug with a male hex end, not super tight either.

I have a '72 K/5 tub parts truck. It had the female 3/8'' hex plug on the diff. It surprised me since the differentials on the '67s and '68s have a square iron plug end, about 1/2'', 9/16'', or 5/8'' -- not sure since I always use a 12'' crescent wrench -- but they're bulletproof.

Ya. The earlier square male ones have a dimple on the backside, don't they? If they would snap, I would think it would leave a hole and threads around the outside

Highly unlikely they ever would, unless the temper of the metal has compromised by high heat -- like a fire.
