CCSB Towing?
Ok so I'm about to pull the trigger on an 88 3/4 ton 4 door. Soon the frame will be cut and shortened. I'm getting a lot of slack from people telling me I'm stupid for wanting to lower it with the existing 3/4 ton suspension instead of converting to 1/2 ton. My concern is on a very rare occasion I might want to tow with it. For example hauling my c10 to a show. So, will the 1/2 ton suspension be enough to do that? I would have no problems installing helper bags on the rear if that's my solution. Plans on either suspension are spindles and springs in the front and flip kit in the rear. I would really like to hear from other board members who have CCSBs that might being towing. Thanks in advance!

Re: CCSB Towing?
Not sure if this helps and I realize its not exactly 1/2 ton but I used my cc dually lowered with flip kit and all but two leaves removed and an AOL setup and towed with it all the time. Zero issues, zero wheel hop...
I plan on doing the same with my ccsb when I finally get back to working on it

Re: CCSB Towing?
yeah I guess it helps a little, lol
Considering you're only running 2 springs that's probably equal or less than the load carrying capacity of the 1/2 tons springs.

Re: CCSB Towing?
Ha ha, yeah I guess I did a pretty poor job explaining. Yes I would think two leafs would have less towing capacity that a stock 1/2 ton leaf pack. The AOL set up is more or less the same as a helper bag set up so I wouldnt be worried about towing anything under 7k lbs.

Re: CCSB Towing?
I tow with mine all the time, ccsb, but its 4x4, 4" lift, no swaybars, 35's. I've put probably 200K on it towing. works just fine. gooseneck or regular.

Re: CCSB Towing?
I've done plenty of towing with half ton trucks and while it will get the job done, it leaves a lot to be desired. Not so much in the suspension, but braking capabilities. Overload springs or air helpers would be fine if you only plan on hauling your truck on rare occasions, but spend your money on the best brakes and tires you can afford. Towing and carrying a load is easy, bringing to a safe stop is where it matters!

Re: CCSB Towing?
You will have smaller brakes all the way around with 1/2 ton stuff. And you will loose a lot of payload capacity if you remove the full float 14 bolt out of it, but I guess it wouldn't really matter what axle is under it if you put 22" wheels on it.

Re: CCSB Towing?
Most likely I'll limit myself to 20s. No promises though!
So that brings up my next question. What tires will handle the load. Obviously they don't make a 10 ply in a 295/40r20.

Re: CCSB Towing?
I wish I could find a decent looking wheel without dropping 4K on wheels alone! All the 8 lugs wheels I find are not meant for lowered trucks and/or have the off-road look.

Re: CCSB Towing?
I don't think you'll have an issue with wheelbase, still be more than a Suburban which I tow with.
You could go to 1/2 ton, brakes on a heavy half (1.25 rotors/bigger rear drums) are fairly close to 3/4 ton sized brakes. I don't see an issue there as long as you use trailer brakes and keep your distance. I've towed for years with my C10 SB, no major issues. Handled a Caprice wagon just fine. Having a weight distributing hitch would be helpful as well. |

Re: CCSB Towing?
Stop being a tight ass. You can drop 4K on some good wheels. Don't cheap out. What you are doing isn't cheap anyways. Text headed your way.

Re: CCSB Towing?
I've always added helper bags when I did any towing with a 1/2 ton, I'd suspect you would want to do the same, especially being lowered.
Whatever you do with the suspension, check the load rating on the tires you select. I cringe when I see trucks towing with low profile passenger car tires, that is just asking for a blowout. |

Re: CCSB Towing?
I understand your dilemma with dropping a 3/4 truck. The option list is short. I tow a lot with my truck, a open and box trailer. And a 3/4 is a must have, to handle the loads.
I have dropped mine and have towed with it, but still in engine break in period. So any heavy loads have been put off for now. My truck rides great, really surprises those who ride with me. I would like to go just a bit lower. Yes the 8 lug aftermarket wheel choices are few if any, and Alcoa's are looking dated. Ken
