What's this radiator fitting for?

Some trucks ran the top heater hose to the radiator, some ran the top heater hose to the water pump.
I have two 1971 4x4's with 350 and TH350, one with AC and one without. My 1971 with AC has it going to the radiator, my 71 without AC has it going to the water pump. I am not sure if AC is the rule or not. I am not sure if the same is true with 1966 and earlier trucks.
