NV4500 swap help
Yes, another NV4500 thread with some dummy asking questions.
The truck im working with is an 85 K20 350 with a hydraulic clutch SM465 backed with an NP208 tcase. I've already bought a 96 and up 4wd GM NV4500 32 spline transmission. Here's what I know from lots of research: (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong) - I need an Advance Adapter 96 and up belhousing kit to bolt my NV4500 to my 350 - I need an Advance Adapter slave cylinder bracket kit to make my stock slave work after I install the threaded rod for their fork - my NP208 will bolt right up since it came from a SM465 truck - I can use my stock SM465 flywheel - a new hole will have to be cut in my trans tunnel for the shifter - my trans crossmember will work with the NV4500 because it is a double hump crossmember - my drive shaft will not need to be modified - I will need a 10 spline 11" clutch disk Now for my questions: Can I use my SM465 pressure plate? Can I use my SM465 throw out bearing or will I need the AA bearing? What do I need to do to my transfer case gear selector stick so that it won't interfere with the NV4500 gear stick? That's it, after all this research I can't figure out what clutch to run without having to spend $300+ on the AA clutch stuff and what to do so my gear sticks wont touch. Thanks for your help guys

Re: NV4500 swap help
You have a fairly easy conversion with a 1985 manual transmission truck. My 1976 was much more work.
Screw getting Advance Adapters stuff. At the extortionate prices they charge it should bolt up. There should be ZERO need to make a correct slave to fork pushrod it should already be in the kit. Keep the stock 1996 + Bell and internal slave. Use the stock 1985 Clutch Master attached to the Stock 1996-2001 slave with a custom hose. If you're worried about the 1985 master not being the right size you can adapt the 1996 + clutch master to the 1985 firewall. Try the 1985 clutch master first. The NP208 shifter should not interfere with the NV4500 stick... The NV4500 is a top loading shifter on the centreline of the transmission just like the SM465. The NP208 will bolt up with a minimum amount of fuss... Pay attention to the clocking and how it affects the needed front propshaft length. The bolt circle is setup for a LH drop Xfer case so it may make the front propshaft yoke slightly high (too short) or slightly low (too long) with a RH drop NP208. Get the torque support rod that runs from the NP208 to the bellhousing. A stock clutch kit for a 1996 GMC 350 in a K2500 bolted to a freshly cut 1985 flywheel will work just fine. Honestly a 1985 K20 SM465 clutch kit will probably work just fine too but just to make sure the pressure plate fingers are the correct depth I'd get the 1996 kit... Why? The GM SM465 & NV4500 both have input shaft dimensions of 1-1/8" 10 splines that stick out the usual 6-5/8" and a pilot tip diameter of .590" ~19/32" . The only real variable is the depth where the pressure plate fingers hit the throwout bearing.

Re: NV4500 swap help
I agree with Hatzie. You really don't have any need to buy the AA stuff unless your wanting to run an external slave cylinder. You should be able to use to '96bellhousing and internal slave. I would buy the clutch kit for a '96 for the reasons that were mentioned above.
It should be a pretty straight forward swap since your truck was already a manual. I swapped an NV4500 in my V30 and it was originally an automatic. It still wasn't to bad. Just nuts & bolts

Re: NV4500 swap help
Thanks for the help Hatzie and chevy3+3. Going with a 96 K2500 clutch setup sounds a like it will be al lot easier on my wallet. Do I use a 96 throwout bearing too or my stock 85?
As for the bellhousing, the guy I bought the transmission from wanted an extra $100 just for the bellhousing and I was already convinced I needed an Advance Adapters bellhousing so I left it with him. Looking back, spending that $100 could've saved me $200.

Re: NV4500 swap help
You will use a flywheel for your '85 but behind that will be everything for a '96. Use a '96 clutch, throw out bearing, etc. Also remember to replace the oil impregnated pilot bushing in the end of your crankshaft.

Re: NV4500 swap help
The 96 integrated slave and throwout bearing are quite different from the 85 fork and bearing. You end up with a new slave when you replace the 1996 throwout bearing.
Use your 85 flywheel with a freshly cut friction surface. Everything else inside the bellhousing should be for the 1996 NV4500. A quality Sachs, LUK, or Valeo clutch kit will include an alignment tool, pilot bushing, friction disc, and pressure plate.

Re: NV4500 swap help
96 used a hydraulic TO bearing and as I recall the bearing retainer that the TO bearing rides on is different for a lever actuator TO. Also, the trans bolt pattern won't match the SM465. I have a 4x4 GAMM code 4500 in the garage right now...

Re: NV4500 swap help
I'm doing a nv4500 swap on my 83 c30, using a 93 trans with the external slave, the only custom piece I'm using is the line, after all the research I have done it should work, I will keep you posted

Re: NV4500 swap help
If you use the 96+ internal hydraulic bearing you HAVE to use the corresponding clutch setup. The pressure plate fingers are shorter than the older stuff. I found this out the hard way with my NV3500 swap. I tried using a 153 tooth flywheel an clutch setup a friend gave me off his car. I got everything installed an the clutch never engaged because of that difference.

Re: NV4500 swap help
I only have the transmission, I didn't get the bellhousing with it. I'm prepared to go the advance adapters route for the bellhousing which will allow me to run my factory clutch hydraulics.
From what you guys are saying I can still just get a 96 clutch kit and TO bearing and be good? Or do they have internal slaves, which would basically be the throwout bearing.

Re: NV4500 swap help
Quote:
The '96 style you have would be an internal slave/TO bearing combo. If you get the 93-94 model then you can get the external slave style but then your external slave cylinder is on the passenger side and can interfere with the front driveline on a 4x4 truck at stock height. A small lift will allow the slave to clear the front driveline.

Re: NV4500 swap help
I walk away from any transmission that comes without a bellhousing. They are obnoxious to replace. No bellhousing? Pound sand. There are two NV4500 bellhousings... 93-95 & 96 and later. They are not interchangeable.
1996 and later have internal slave-cylinder/throwout-bearing units.
