with auto hubs does ring and pinion always spin in 2wd?

i have auto hubs and a 208 and was wondering if with the locking hubs if the ring and pinion always spin and then the transfer case just locks to 4wd and then starts to pull the front. I am looking to set my own front gears up and was hoping that it was not always spinning incase it was not 100 percent dead on. The truck will go into 4wheel drive only a few times a year. Thanks

this explains it but its a spring that basically locks it when the front diff is engaged.
