'69-'72 Chevy p10 Step Van to take to ... Australia
Hi Everybody,
Will try again. I posted a link to an ebay auction that had ended, which apparently is a no no and the thread was closed. Apologies to the mods I am currently looking for a '69 to '72 Chevy Shorty p10 Step Van to buy and take back to Australia. Kinda crazy but anyway that's what im doing. The '69 to '72 shorty is the one i decided i like the best, it has the boxed in headlights and grill i like. Given the age of these trucks I don't need to have it converted to RHD when I bring it out to Australia. Ideally I am looking for one with the lower roof and no serving windows cut in the side panels and the shortest they made them. I am looking to buy it and then will probably send it to Conrad at Misfits Ice Cream Customs in Arizona to get it worked on to look like one of these: https://www.facebook.com/45390384811...type=3&theater https://au.pinterest.com/pin/155233518382633582/ I would be looking to replicate something like these, similar paint and interiors, I like the stance of these two with the whitewall tyres and red rims. The Van would be used as a promotional vehicle and sometimes delivery van. Given that when I bring it out here I doubt that any Mechanics out here will have seen anything like it I suspect I will need a fair bit of work done on it. Although I did find a c10 enthusiasts website here in Australia, which underneath are pretty similar to the p10.... I think I read that.... could be completely wrong. I have seen some of the great builds on the site with similar P10's. Would love any tips anyone was willing to share. Apart from body work, paint and interiors I think I would make it automatic, put in Power Steering, Bigger Radiator and anything else you recommended to make the vehicle as easy to drive and maintain over here in Australia?? Cheers In relation to some of the comments on the old thread before it was closed. I really like the Chevy p10 over the Grumman, I did entertain a Jeep F3, as this is already RHD, but the p10 won out. I did see the blue p10 on craigslist, but i prefer the lower roof, although the mosaic dash is appealing! Yes I had read that the aluminium body is preferable over the steel. Thanks for the comments and I'll try again. Last edited by Hammando; 10-22-2016 at 05:28 PM. Reason: pic links |

OK. I will reply again being the last one was deleted.
Several body cos. built bodies for these trucks. Grumman is the best. All of theirs are aluminum. Union City is a good body also but some of theirs are steel. They have severe rust problems. You would want to use an alum. body if you are going to do all that to it. If it has a manual trans. & you want to change to automatic you will be best getting a 73 up model. The 67-72 had the crossmember under the bell housing & it needs to be removed to change to an automatic trans. Search Mill Supply for info & parts for thes trucks. |

Joined up now. Apologies to everyone.
Thanks Wrenchbender, okay aluminum the way to go. I am unfortunately going to ignore your advice on getting a '73 or up model, I prefer the snub nose of the earlier models. Thanks for the heads up though I appreciate it. Posted via Mobile Device |

Just got a Private Message from an Aussie on this forum pointing out a '67 step van is actually for sale on ebay in Australia!
So mine won't be the first one out here at least. Unfortunately the one for sale is a long one so no good for me. |

There is no problem removing the cross member under the bell housing to fit an automatic. Been done 100's of times on the C-10's including mine.

No clue as to what engine is in there now. OEM '68 would've been a 327 V8 or 250 L6. The military liked the 250s. Benson is about an hour East of Tucson, and Misfits Customs is in PHX, about 2 hours 'West' [NNW, actually] of Tucson. So the van is at least 3 hours [in road time] away from the shop. Can't tell if the wheelbase length has the desired shortness. I have very little experience with stepvans. Also this rig is a P/20, 3/4 ton. Did you intend to convert to RHD? USPS used to run a fleet of right-hand drive vans, so the postman could access rural mailboxes without moving in the truck. Still do.

That's cool. Very nice.
I always wanted a P10, but the only ones I ever saw (rarely) were already beaten to death.
