Pinion angle question

So I am putting a 12 bolt under my 62, I just got the mounting pads cut off the rear end and I'm just about ready to weld the brackets back on in the correct location but I'm unsure of what to set the pinion angle at since I currently have a two piece driveshaft, but I will likely be switching to a one piece very soon. what I am asking is if a one piece and two piece require different pinion angles? Thanks

Re: Pinion angle question

Did you not check the angle on your original differential? If not then the pinion angle should be the same as the output of the trans, so that both are parallel at ride height.

Yes I still have the original eaton ho32 installed, I know the simple solution would be to set the new rear end up on the same angle as the original but what I'm wondering is that if I switch to a one piece driveline (will probably be this winter) do I need a different pinion angle?

Re: Pinion angle question

depends on what the angle is.

two piece shafts are a little more tolerant of the differences. your splitting up the forces on two shafts in stead the forces on the universal joints of one (if that makes sense).

tell us the angle at the trans.

Here is a chart from the guys who built my 2-piece shaft. Mine is original short bed 1-piece. I am super low on bags and the x tunnel on frame was too close for comfort.

Re: Pinion angle question

I think the standard is usually trans points 3* down, and the rear end is 3* up. That said, I think the main goal is to have the two angles zero each other out, so if your trans is, say, 4* down, you'll want to nose the diff 4* up.

He did say what the ideal operating angles for a one piece are (which was very helpful), however my question was asking if a one piece and two piece require different angles

Re: Pinion angle question

I would set the pinion angle the same as on your HO32.

doesn't matter what the driveshaft is 1 piece or 2 it is the relationship between the mainshaft of the transmission(which is the same as the crankshaft angle) and it's relationship with the angle of the pinion shaft.

Ok thanks for the help Ron, I suspected so but just wanted clarification to be sure.
