Dana 60 inner wheel bearing
I am replacing the bearings on a Dana 60 front axle I got from a 1985 Chevy truck. The inner wheel bearing that I removed was a Timken 387-AS. The bearing that came in the kit from Yukon is Timken 387-A. According to the Timken website they both have a bore of 2.25". I can't get the new bearing on the spindle all the way on by hand. I probably could with some taps with a hammer. Is this normal?

Re: Dana 60 inner wheel bearing
New bearings require a little persuasion to ramp onto the spindle. But, your inner race has the same bore but different height. One is used to push the hub further out so you can run 35 spline shafts without the shaft rubbing the cap of the lockout.
The taller race is the d60 carrier bearing race btw. |

Re: Dana 60 inner wheel bearing
So I should go ahead and use some force to get the bearing (hub) installed? Thanks for the reply.

Force as in a couple whacks with a deadblow yes.
It is heavy and hard to get square on the spindle but once it's slips on it slides great. Don't go crazy. Make sure it's as close to square as possible and pick it up a little. |

Re: Dana 60 inner wheel bearing
Guess I should not be so cautious. Rubbed a little ice on the spindle and it slid right on. Thanks for the input. Now I just need to find a socket with the four tabs so I can preload properly.

Re: Dana 60 inner wheel bearing
The correct sockets are readily available at your local parts store. I think I got both (D60-4 pin & 14B-6 pin) at my local.

Re: Dana 60 inner wheel bearing
Great. Thank you for the information. I am working in Visalia right now. I stopped in and talked to Kevin at Valley Off Road. He let me borrow his 4 pin socket. Very nice guy.
