Need Opinion's on truck I just seen

Took my brother to look at a 70 C/10 CST LB for my nephew,The body was straight ,needed paint had original faded paint ,has one rust hole at drivers side lower back of cab.
New 350 4bolt MR Goodwrench engine,Eldelbrock manifold and 1406 carb , Doug Thorley headers ,new radiator and exhaust ,rebuilt 350 trans.
Interior was fair original headliner, Rally wheels 6 lug.
The only problem I seen besides the rust hole was the brakes seemed low but it stopped ok and it has a camper shell on it with a boot and no back window .
He also had 5 lug disc brake setup in the bed.

He wants 3000 , is it worth it???

Without pics I can't say for sure, but around here that might be a litte high. But there is a heck of a lot of diff. btween CA and MS!

Bill, It sounds like a nice truck to start with considering the new drivetrain expense. Here in Maryland a good body is hard to find. I would make a cash offer first that's not insulting and let him counter. Good luck!

My brother tried that ,This guy was older and grouchier than I am he walked back into the house ,He want 3000 and I think it's a little too much . My brother offered 2700 .

I picked mine up in July of this year. Paint and body fair. Original 15X8 rally's. Tired 350 out of A 75-76 truck. Edelbrock 600 cfm on performer intake. Headers turbo muflers. interior very good condition. $1800.

I think for $2.5-3K, even in California, you can find more truck for the buck than that. I paid $2500 in August for my 71 LWB with a new 4 row radiator, new carpet, 15x8 alloys w/275/60/15 tires, square chrome tube grill, straight body, power brakes, factory A/C, good glass, does not smoke, rust free, etc... And I talked him down from the 3K he was going to ask for it.

But then if you like it, (love it) want it and intend to adopt it as your own, cherish it, nurture it and all that other warm-fuzzy stuff, then there is no putting a price on that! Beauty is in the eye of the beholder!

Might be worth it in Canadian dollars Bill. Did you have a real good look underneath? Rockers, cab supports and bolts channels on the rear wheel well tubs still intact? Everytime you find something rotten take $200 off the starting price.

I paid 2500 for a '71 longbed with a new Goodwrench engine, and a rebuily taranny with 10 thousand on it. I'm finding more rust than I originally had seen though. Oh well, I fell in love with the truck when I saw it, so there was no turning back

by the sounds of it I wouldn't. I just did a quick search on traderonline.com and for $1200.00 more you can get THIS ONE . Granted this one is $1200.00 more but sounds to me like this has about $3k worth of difference.

Ugh

Whoa. I'm getting depressed reading what y'all bought your trucks for and what I paid for mine. The engine is well done and quality work but the more I look at the rest of the truck the more I see I want to do. So far I:
-put in a new dash pad
- new rear cab mounts ( others on hand and will be installed as soon as I can get time)
- I just took out the new radiator the previous owner put in it - it was a 2" thick 6 cyl radiator. I put in a 4 row 2 5/8" thick wider "desert cool" HD radiator
-Gutted the doors and POR'd the door interiors to stop rust
-Rustoleom spray painted the various door mechanisms and reinstalled 'em
-put in all new window rubber and felt throughout both doors. Have the door seal on hand to out it in when I get time

I still need to:

-replace the passenger side cab corner (99% bondo now)
-replace all the floor supports. Only 3 of 4 there now. All rusted.
-replace the passenger inner fender - battery acid ate it all along the front attach points
-replace the radiator support assembly (Yeah the BIG one that holds the radiator, headlights, etc). Batt acid ate the pass side corner of it along the inner fender area
-replace the battery tray with the original style one (POR'd first)
-replace the now fiberglass repaired (but is a good solid repair) outer floor edges of the cab
-replace the inner and outer rocker panels. Look OK but I dropped the jack on one and the outer rocker didn't bend, it cracked and deformed like rusted metal.
-put some sound and heat proofing in the cab
-put a cover over the gas tank
-put in 3 point seat belts
-wet sand all the runs I see all over the paint job

and I paid $5000. Ooof.

Folks around here thought it was an OK price - not a steal but not too outrageous. New rebuilt High performance 4 bolt main 350 ('79), good '79 all syncro 3 speed, new power steering instillation ('85 model), rebuilt front end (it IS nice and tight), new two piece drive shaft, newly reworked brakes, new (but flawed) paint job, brand new six spoke painted wheels and new big terrain cruiser tires.


From what I can see and from the parts prices I see my engine in its all built up state is roughly a $3000 piece of work. New wheels and tires were around $500. So if I look at it in the right view point my truck was "only" $1500. Its just all the "accesories" that brought that total up.

I think 3k for a truck with a almost rust free body and a good drivetrain is a decent price. Good bodys are hard to come by (here in the rust belt anyway....).

Here is what i have had to do to my original $2500 purchase since i have had it:

-New timing chain, water pump
-New brake pads
-New tires
-Rebuilt 350 engine
-New exhaust
-New carb
-New rear brakes
-Rebuilt TH350
-New u-joints and carrier bearings
-Another set of new tires
-New front brakes
-New PS pump
-New tie rods
-New MC
-2 new hard brake lines

Here is what it still needs to be nice:
-New cab
-New bedside
-New hood
-New tailgate
-New paint
-New interior

So my initial $2500 investment turned into a $5000 total money pit. And for $5000 i could have bought a truck that was already much nicer. I would say that if you can get a mechanicaly sound truck that only needs paint for $3k, go for it! Then throw on a 2K paint job and have a nice truck
