Smile Season's Over....time for storage...soon.

Well, all good things must come to an end.
Around here that means the end to my yearly 'road' insurance which is a 6 month stint for me.
Now, that said....that means its time to start prepping the 'ol '72 for a N.West winter which means wet and damp....same old, same old. Usually that means no snow...but like Seattle and the U.S/PNW, we get a boatload of rain, moisture and dampness for months on end.
So that will mean about 3-4 cans of Rustcheck and a good 3-4 hr stint under the truck, under the hood, in the box, in the cab.....filling 'er up with that wonder drug. I will be removing all the little access caps and ensuring I get that stuff in there nice and thick.....then it will undoubtedly be time for a good long shower...lol.
That way when I spark it up in the spring....at the very least I know that the body is as I left it.....and being a big time hater of the tin worm, I wouldn't have it any other way.

How about you guys.....what is your storage strategy to ensure you don't suffer from the seasonal rust blues....

All Good

and that my friend is why I like a year round 4x4. A lot of work storing and only good for the summer, have to say wish I had room for a 2wd and a 4wd, but to many kids and momma plus big motorhome all in my small yard.

Live in the desert, where winterization is not necessary.

Lived in Victoria when I was a lot younger in the Navy, a "lot" of rain, can see why the storage time and work, well worth it but the desert would be nice and dry alright.

Re: Season's Over....time for storage...soon.

Like a lot of guys on this forum, I've got more vehicles than I have places to store them. My double garage has only room for one car, as I have woodworking tools in there. My Mustang convert goes in the garage every October, and gets road licensed again in March. I change the oil, fill the tank, put on the battery tender, jack up the car to get the load off the suspension and brakes, make sure the engine is completely warmed up, and put the car cover on it. Two or three times during the winter, I take off the cover, start the car, run it till it is fully hot, make sure to cycle the AC, put it in gear, etc. then cover it up again.

The 98 is meant to do the dirty beater type work.

The 69 should be covered up, and I'm working on that. I've applied for collector plates and insurance, and if I get rid of my table saw, I should be able to garage it over the winter. Vancouver has the same kind of weather, maybe a bit worse, than Victoria and Seattle. One thing about the truck, I can put some of the crap that's in the garage in the bed of the truck to make room in the garage.

For now, it has a good coat of wax on it, and it gets washed frequently, and driven hardly at all.

Re: Season's Over....time for storage...soon.

Here on the Western Canadian Prairie I usually put mine away for Winter storage the 2nd or 3rd week of October. For storage I change oil, add Stabil or SeaFoam to the gas tank when filling then drive the truck for 15/20 minutes before parking to circulate the Stabil. I hook up a Battery Tender and don't start the truck until Spring.

I keep the truck garaged all year around and good thing because this year on October 5th/6th we received 15 inches ( 25 centimetres ) of snow. There is an old saying here in Saskatchewan and its " if you don't like the weather , wait 5 minutes". Today November 6th one month to the day after our record breaking early 15 inches of snow, and its all gone now, it hit a record breaking 68F ( 20 celsius ) and is supposed to stay in 50's and low 60's this coming week. Maybe there is something to this climate change thing..

Re: Season's Over....time for storage...soon.

I pull the battery, cover the air cleaner and make sure the gas tank is really low and maybe add a little stabil fuel into the tank and drive it around to get some into the carb and that's about it. I have had to sometimes get it out of garage for some reason or another and plugging the block heater in for a few hours and it's starts right away even in super cold weather but I'd never risk a drive, our roads are horrible in the winter here.

Thats interesting. Thats the exact opposite of what I do.
I fill up the gas tank and add fuel stabilizer to it of course.
The backstory being that if the gas tank is 'empty or low' during storage, the exposed surface in the gas tank lends itself to condensation due to the temp difference. This in turn can create surface rust on the inner walls of the tank, which ends up in the gas and ultimately the fuel system.
So I fill up the tank so that surface is negligible.

Everything I have read regarding storage has always (to my recollection) recommended either completely filling the tank...or completely emptying the tank, depending on how long the storage is.

My two bits.

Re: Season's Over....time for storage...soon.

I park all my vehicles in the garage year round. I do absolutely nothing special to store them for winter. literally nothing. I drove my 67 to work this morning since its in the 60s this week here. When it gets too cold or starts snowing, I'll just cover my vehicles up till spring.

been storing my trucks like that for 15 years, and my dad has stored his chevelle since 1988 and did nothing special. Never had any problems. will rotate a battery tender between vehicles now to keep batteries fresh but that's it.

I drive mine all year round. That's why I installed the 99 Tahoe heated seats.

Get out and drive the truck this summer and have some fun!
It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

I like to use a truck bag to store mine. Put those silica packets in the bag & nothing really rusts at all- it's like a huge ziplock
