Engine Code Meaning

I have a 1968 GMC C2500, with the 396 engine. The number on the pad is T0306XF. Can someone tell me what that means? There is no VIN number on the pad. I have the build sheet so I know the truck came with a 396. I would like to be able to match the engine to the truck. Thanks!

Re: Engine Code Meaning

Is it common to not have the truck VIN punched on the pad? I know GMC auto products put the VIN on pads for year before 1968.

Trucks didn't get them.
What year they started to I don't recall.
I'm thinking 1973 or 74.

Re: Engine Code Meaning

In the mid 1960's, Congress was threatening legislation to curb automobile theft.

GM started stamping partial VIN's on passenger car engines. Trucks were low priority on the thieves agenda at the time so no VIN on truck engines.

Re: Engine Code Meaning

You can dig deeper and check your casting and casting date codes.
If your block is original your motor's date code should be in november or december. Blocks were usually cast 2 to 3 months before they were used.
Look here for that info and where to find it.
