Value of a 66 gmc stepside
Sorry if this is wrong place to post this, not new to these trucks I built a 69 stepside finished it last year. I have the opportunity to buy a 1966 gmc stepside that an older gentleman had started restoration on and since passed away. I'm set to go see it tomorrow to see what type of shape it's in. The wife has a price in mind already which I don't know or won't disclose til i see what it looks like. Really having a hard time finding what these trucks are worth and if a gmc vs a Chevy is any different. I would say this is a good project. So what would you pay for a project lets say in decent condition and not assembled.
Thanks for the help |

Re: Value of a 66 gmc stepside
GMC's tend to hold more value than Chevys. Though some will try to tell me I am wrong, it's quite common to see a GMC go for more.
You say Not assembled? So I am assuming the project was started and given up on? If EVERYTHING is there and in good shape. Not a ton of rust and rot. Not assembled I'd say $1500 or under. Assembled, running and driving is a whole different story than disassembled and not. What motor does it come with?

Motor who knows, ill know more tomorrow and see exactly what it is and if I'm bringing it home or not. I just don't know or could find any info on the gmcs online, or what the Going prices are of these trucks.

Re: Value of a 66 gmc stepside
GMC's were dubbed the "Gentleman's truck", they were a little more flashy and had more bling that your typical Chevy. Also GM used them for trials of accessories and upgrades, this is why you sometimes find a BOP motor in a GMC, as well as the BB v6's.
I agree with what TJ said.

Re: Value of a 66 gmc stepside
It's impossible to know the value without knowing the condition and how much of the restoration has been done.
One of the differences on the GMC is they came with a leaf spring rear end, unless ordered otherwise.

Re: Value of a 66 gmc stepside
My prize turned into nothing good. Pretty sure it's no more then a 1500 dollar truck, bed is trash needs too much rust repair but cab is ok shape. Has rot up front in inner wheel well both left and right. Not even sure they sell those. Having them clean the truck out its full of crap. One good thing is it's been in garage for 20 years, bed wasn't so lucky they left it outside. |

Re: Value of a 66 gmc stepside
I'd say shoot for $500 and go no more than $1000.
The only really valuable things I see as of now are the Chrome grill and the V6(SBC extremists will say other wise on that. lol). The one side of the hood looks to be in fine shape. Stepside panels and fenders are available repop or you can find another bed.

Re: Value of a 66 gmc stepside
Yeah that's what I was thinking. Does anyone sell the inner fender wells or patch panel for up by the radiator support? Both sides are gone and I'm inbetween on that right now, if it's worth it or not.

Re: Value of a 66 gmc stepside
In short yes they make them. I put new inner fenders along with outer fenders and a grill support on my 66. They didn't fit too bad. Not perfect but better then what I had to work with.

Re: Value of a 66 gmc stepside
Well that's good, wasn't sure with the way that looked how I was repairing that. Now the question is what do I offer this old lady, without insulting her which I really don't want to do. I was told she wanted 3k for this which in no way ever worth even close to that, TJ said between 5-1k, what would you feel comfortable at knowing there's a lot of missing or not assembled interior-exterior and bed is shot.

Re: Value of a 66 gmc stepside
From what I see I wouldn't pay much. But then again I'm always looking for a deal. I paid 500 bucks for my 66 Chevy. Complete but non runner. Box was toast as well and the work and money I've spent on mine I'd have been better off buying one that is farther along. Good luck with which ever way you go with it.

Re: Value of a 66 gmc stepside
Be honest with her.
Tell her you know she was looking at $3k but you don't want to offer anything to her in fear of upsetting her. When/if she asks why, just tell her what things need to be done to get it back on the road and a $3k truck should at least be running...

Re: Value of a 66 gmc stepside
Agreed with Clyde.
At LEAST running. I bought my 64 GMC running on 4 cylinders for $500 and drove it home. Kind of a steal, but I was lucky the guy just wanted to be Rid of the truck...and 4 people already turned it down. And luckily it was just two crossed plug wires. A 3000 dollar truck is a complete running driver that's been tuned up and possibly even road worthy. Like Clyde said, Just nicely explain to her all the work that needs to be done before shooting an offer. A truck in that shape around here would go to scrap before anyone paid 3K for it. The worst she can say is No. And at that price the truck will sit for some time unless a devout GMC enthusiast wants it. But if it's a 305 and not a larger V6 even the most devoted GMC guys will probably pass onto another.

Yeah I'm just gonna break it to her that it's not worth what she was asking. Hopefully by seeing my 69 and how much she loved it she will let it go to someone who will put it back together.

Re: Value of a 66 gmc stepside
Its hard to compare east coast prices to west. Here in the rust belt a decent truck is hard to find. You can get everything you need for that truck at Carlisle in the spring. In Virginia thats a 2500 truck.

Re: Value of a 66 gmc stepside
Hey, they even rust out here in California, think mostly from leaking weatherstrips. My truck's a native and the passenger side rocker has some rust throughs.

Re: Value of a 66 gmc stepside
Well we settled on a price over the weekend, going to go pick it up this weekend I'll post pics of it coming out of it's hiding spot after almost 20 years. This one definitely is going to take some time to put back together!

Re: Value of a 66 gmc stepside
So I brought home the 66 gmc what a day trying to get it out of that garage. Has so good and bad found a lot of rechromed parts but still a whole lot missing.
O well for 500 I guess I can piece it together. |
