rear control arm bushings
is it possible to just unbolt behind the cab to change these?
thinking a c clamp should let me do the job. trying not to take the whole rear end apart to do it. thanks for any suggestions. |

Re: rear control arm bushings
To get mine out I had to pull the trailing arm. I went with urithane so I needed to leave the outer sleeve in it from the old bushing. I used a hole saw to drill out the rubber. Those things are in there good and are not easy to get out. I don't think it will work just pulling the front bolt.

Re: rear control arm bushings
I haven't done it, but with the bolt out, could you drop it down out of the mount and burn the old bushing out with a torch?

Re: rear control arm bushings
I did it with a C-Clamp and a socket (wrench type) I forget what size but a larger one I had in my drawer.
Once the center race was out I worked out the rubber.

Re: rear control arm bushings
When I did mine I supported the truck with jack stands at the rear of the frame. Dropped the front bolts and drilled through the old bushing several times and tapped it out with a chisel. Installed my new urethane bushings and put her back on the ground

Re: rear control arm bushings
Sound like some solid ideas, avoiding using the torch is good, the rubber fumes are toxic.
Anybody done this job with the arms still attached at the axle with the sleeved bushing replacements? Figure I can just cut the old cups out with a sawzall but pressing the new ones in might be interesting. |

Re: rear control arm bushings
I just did it with the poly bushings and the new inner sleeve. The first one was a little tough, but second one was easy.
I did bend the bottom of the brackets 1/4" to center everything. After in, when the bolt tightened the pieces bent back to straight. Figure that rubber would have been a walk in the park. Not really a poly fan, place I ordered from sent me the wrong ones. |

Re: rear control arm bushings
Good to hear, what method did you use to get the old bushing/sleeve out?

Re: rear control arm bushings
I got the first one half way out with a c clamp. The second half went out with a hammer.
The second one went out with a hammer to a straight bar. Second one was way easier. The c clamp is tougher; you need to hold c clamp, hold large socket and tighten. I made sure to drill way more holes with the second one. no chance of any rubber holding me back. |

Re: rear control arm bushings
Okay cool thanks for the info. I was really thinking I would need to remove the arms to do thi.
The C clamp is a great idea but I could see if being a PITA |

Re: rear control arm bushings
once the bolt is out, get a crow bar and push down on the arm. Once the arm clears the frame, put a long piece of metal between the arm and the frame to keep it down out of the way. Gives you a little more room to drill.

Re: rear control arm bushings
I hope you have better luck then I did. I couldn't impact them off or use my super long breaker bar to even get them to budge. I ended up having to cut them off as well as the ubolts on the axel. Since I had to go though all that trouble I just pressed the bushings out. I already had the bed off so it wasn't that hard to get to.
