Heater Core Removal - 64 C-10 - Thrift Air - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Greetings,

I have reviewed several heater box removal threads and was hoping to get the info I needed from them and not have to bother anyone with another posting on this topic. Well I have hit a minor snag and just wanted to make sure that I am interpreting things correctly.

I believe that LILRED66 mentioned in a prior posting that in addition to removing the 5 hex lag bolts that secure the box to the frame, one has to also remove 2 speed nuts from inside the cab.

I have removed the engine bay lag bolts. The right side of the unit (as I face the front of the truck) appears free. I can see a threaded bolt trying pull out of the back right side of the box which is coming from through the firewall. So my gut is telling me nothing was actually holding that bolt in place.

The left side is different. Something is clearly preventing the left side of the box from freeing up to be pulled out. So I am thinking there is some kind of similar nut/bolt on that side. Am I right here? Just wanted to verify that on a 64 there are two speed nuts or bolts or something that I have to undo. If this is right just let me know.

I must be blind since I am not seeing this left side nut/bolt when I get inside the cab. Given the firewall insulation pad I installed a few months ago, I am wondering if the padding is covering the bolt/nut from the inside. I have started to pull back the padding to see what I can find and will continue to do so.

I also undid the 3 small hex bolts used to mount the inside defroster/heater unit to the inside portion of the firewall. I figured that was not going to resolve my problem. And of course it did not.

Any advice would be appreciated. I hope to avoid peeling back too much of my insulation.

This may help, there is one near the center of the cab labeled Heater Box.

Master Chief,

Sir - I hear you and understand the diagram. The right side, which is the area I believe you circled, is free and able to move for me. The resistance I am getting is on the left side.

That is a recirculating heater not a Thrift Air heater.

Sometimes I find it easier to remove the top of the heater box. The part that was attached with the lag bolts. Then the rest will come away from the firewall easier.

I thought that the recirculating heater was the thrift air heater. If it is not, what does the thrift air look like? Is it the two piece with one in the cab and one in the engine compartment?

This is all you wanted to know about heaters but were afraid to ask (excerpt from link above )

"As far as I know there are 4 heater options 60-66 chev and gmc."
1) no heater: firewall delete plates- 60-66 (upper delete plate is the same all years, lower is 60-61, and then 62-66)
2) cheap heater: "recirculating", core and fan inside cab- 60-63
3) cheap heater: "thrift-air", same as deluxe, smaller core but only 1 knob for fan and air.-64-66
4) deluxe heater: "deluxe", core and fan in engine compartment.-60-66

By the way, I did get the heater box off, got the rust removed, painted the box, and installed a replacement heater core. Thanks again.
