Collector Plates Craziness
My truck is what is commonly called a "survivor". Nice original shape, mostly original paint, original vinyl bench in perfect shape, etc. There's a collector car plate (tag) and insurance program in BC, so I applied, as there's a huge saving in annual fees.
Got my application returned, the guy who makes the decision wants me to repaint the glove compartment door, as there are a few paint chips on it, and he thought the rear step bumper was non-original, and in addition, there's a surface rust line on the edge of the bumper right where the trailer ball would be. I hate to paint the glove box door, but for the savings, it's worth it.I just won't be original anymore. Will use Rustoleum Nutmeg, as was suggested by a board member, a pretty close colour match for my saddle interior. I called them, and told them the bumper was original equipment, and that it was listed on the SPID. He agreed to accept the bumper, if I send him a photo of the SPID, and touch up the surface rust with silver paint. Sheesh!

I'd be curious if there's some sort of language in the law that requires the vehicle to be in a certain condition vs the year/make/model of the vehicle determining its "collector" status. Here in the US a vehicle 20 or 25 years old is considered vintage/collectible and ellidgable for collectors insurance and plates. There are some insurance companies who will insure certain newer vehicles as collector/limited use though too. Generally those are vehicles like Vettes, Vipers and the like.

You could also repaint a different glove box door, install it for inspections/pictures and keep your original paint door for reinstallation once the paperwork is completed.
This also makes me glad North Dakota only goes on age (and no restrictions on how/when to drive them) for permanent antique plates.

What kind of Soviet nonsense is that? 100 miles to the south you say "Here's my old registration" and you get a lifetime collector car plate for anything 25 years and older (might be 30 now I'm not sure).
There's certainly no inspection. So up there your vehicle has to be totally stock to qualify for collector plates?

How much savings is it ? Is it really worth it ? My truck is not a daily driver I only pay 240.00 for the year .

I got pulled over because a young cop "never seen those plates before".
I handed him a paper explaining YOM plates, and he says "this doesn't look like show car" It's not about it being a show car, it's about the age of the car and it's recreational, non commuter use and the limited annual mileage it racks up- It's hardly worth the taxes for driving it 300 miles a year. If this were solid rust, and I painted it with a brush, it would still fall under collector vehicle status. "...Well... slow down." ( I was going 23 in a 25 because a dang cop was behind me) |

FWIW, my car is originally from Saskatchewan, where my Dad bought it new. It's had the same 3-digit plate number for 48 years. I had to register is as an annual normal vehicle down here (Seattle) because the 3-digit format doesn't match their preferred format, so I wound up with a personalized plate and an annual fee!
I could "fix" this by running a different plate, but I just can't do it. Not after 48 years.

in Missouri all you got to do is fill out an application, send it in with your money and your set. I've seen some pretty rusty trucks with historic tags.

Like the idea of a replacement glove box door. Might be hard to fine one, though.
Will look into this, maybe there's a boneyard around here with the part I need.

Look on the parts board on this site. I saw someone selling a bunch of glove box doors. I have an extra one in medium green if that is the color you need. I just gotta say, they wont clas your truck as an antique cause of of chips on a glove box door and a small surface rust line on a bumper, that is totally nuts. If it was safety thing like your ebrake not working or major rust I could understand it. Here in Saskatchewan anything 30 years or older does not need an Inspection ever even if imported into Saskatchewan.

Hi Geezer. Yeah, last time I was out there, KMS had one, pretty well picked over. Don't remember if the glove box door was there, and whether or not it was plain, or had an emblem on it.
Are the emblems attached with adhesive, or are there holes in the door to attach them? Anyone know.

Your 1969 GMC Glove Box Emblem has molded pins for attaching to holes in the glove box face.
You could eliminate the emblem pins and use 3M tape or an adhesive glue like contact cement for a non drilled hole installation. Sorry to hear about your hassle and this is exactly why I don't do the 'collector plate' route to save a few bucks or otherwise.
On top of that, as far as I am concerned the restrictions on the usage just doesn't wash with me. Do you have a quality appraisal on your truck?...how many months a year do you drive it? These are questions I looked into when I got my insurance....noting that I only license my truck for 6 months a year. All Good Coley

That was my initial impression, but as I read through the thread, it sounds like it's the classic car insurance that's requiring the inspection and repairs, rather than the government. Is that correct, LongBox?

The collector car license and insurance program is run by the Insurance Corp. of BC, which is a crown corporation, think quasi government. I understand why they rejected the application, as they want to stop folks with ratty old beaters getting the cheap insurance, even if the beaters are more than 25 years old. They kind of see things as black and white, the truck is either restored to something close to show room condition, so it qualifies, or it's showing wear, and it does not. The collector car world recognizes survivors or "preservation" vehicles. The Pebble Beach Concours has a preservation category.
My truck is most definitely a survivor. The two pictures below show what they rejected, the glove box, and the rear step bumper, which is factory RPO V43. They want the surface rust sanded and painted, which is no big deal. So, I'm getting another glove box door, I'll paint it to match (as close as I can), and put the original away in the garage. This forum is very helpful, and I appreciate all the tips. The photoshop idea is very sneaky!

So it won't be a rickety unsafe for public hiways get around the laws hunk of junk going down the road as long as the glovebox door and hitch area of the step bumper don't have minor paint flaws? Ok, thanks for explaining. It all makes so much sense to me now

In Tn you can run your (67) stamped tag but they also issue you a new tag that must be kept in the vehicle , no inspections or crazy paperwork here . The hillbillie state has some pretty lax DMV laws , you still don't have to show proof of insurance to get a new tag as many states require ,We have high limits on our uninsured motorist coverage here and i wouldnt drive without it . .I just renewed my dd tag $60.00

PA used to be nazis about getting plates for an old vehicle (they call them antique plates here)
I had gotten rejected for having a "hurst equipped" sticker on my back window. this shows you how dumb the people reviewing these were- I cut a piece of cardboard the same size as my back window, painted it black, and taped to over my window since I didn't wanted to scrap off the hurst sticker from the 70s. they accepted it! though now we have gone from one extreme to the other- no more pics required so as long as your vehicle is old enough you get plates. |
