62 rear axle gears.

I am looking for my axle gear ratio for my 62. I think it's got 390 gears but I can't find the stamp on the axle. I really don't want to drop the cover to find the number. Can someone tell me where to look?

I sent you a PM.
I have used this method to determine the rear gears in an open diff on several occasions.

Jack up the rear diff to get both rear tires off the ground. Then mark the drive shaft and have a friend count the total shaft revolutions made while you spin one rear tire 10 full revolutions. Then multiply the DS revs X 2 and divide by 10.

Re: 62 rear axle gears.

Lugnutz Only jack up one wheel for open diff

here is how to do either

Posi: Jack both wheels off the ground. Turn one wheel 1 complete turn.

- Count the turns on the drive shaft.

Non-posi: Jack one wheel off the ground. Turn the wheel 2 complete turns.

- Count the turns on the drive shaft.

IF you want to be more accurate ..... Posi wheel 10 turns count shaft divide by 10 .... non posi 20 wheel turns count shaft divide by 10

Re: 62 rear axle gears.

The reason I suggest 10 turns is because 3.73 and 3.90 are very similar in appearance with only one or two turns of the wheel.

Re: 62 rear axle gears.

62 only had 3.38 (auto?never seen one myself) 3.90 most and 4.11 opt. (overdrive?) no 3.73. Now that's if you have the org ho axle, not a 12bolt.
