Flywheel question

Been a while since I posted here and know of the wealth of knowledge with you guys. You have helped me put in the past and hope again.
I have a 47 thriftmaster with a 235 truck motor built in 1962. I am going thru a major rebuild and came across another problem. My flywheel is worn out, cannot use it anymore. The casting number is GM1. My builder a says it's 10 inch with three pilot holes.
What I don't know is what it's compatible with. I do know that 6 and 12volt flywheels are different. This one is 12volt.
My local napa lists one as 10.4 inch from a 62 chevy car. Since it's aftermarket I can't match casting numbers. Is that the one I need?
Any comments would be appreciated.
Thank you.

Re: Flywheel question

My understanding is that it would work. Just be sure to get the right size pressure plate and clutch size as many are available.

Re: Flywheel question

Then if it has the same tooth count (168 for 12v) you should be good to go. You have any internal mods to the engine? After market cam? If you do and its not too aggressive have the flywheel lightened a bit it makes a nice difference.

Re: Flywheel question

I'd have to be the one that asks what is wrong with the flywheel you have that can't be fixed by either resurfacing the flywheel or replacing the ring gear.

I've seen a few that were so heat damaged from a slipping clutch or someone riding the clutch that they can't be resurfaced and if that is the case a new one is probably the best way to go.

If the ring gear is bad that is a fifteen minute project for most of us if the flywheel is already out of the truck.

My ongoing truck projects:
48 Chev 3100 that will run a 292 Six.
71 GMC 2500 that is getting a Cad 500 transplant.
77 C 30 dualie, 454, 4 speed with a 10 foot flatbed and hoist. It does the heavy work and hauls the projects around.

Re: Flywheel question

The ring gear is the problem. My builder thinks he found one that will work. He's going to call me if it doesnt.

Re: Flywheel question

That should be one of the easiest things to find you ever hunt for.
https://www.napaonline.com/napa/en/p...15/BK_6003015_

Or at O'Reilly's
http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/se...ear=1962&make=

The Compatibility chart on O"Reilly's site says it fits 7602 different Chevrolet models.
