OEM Gas Cap Painted?
Hey All,
I was wondering if in 1972 c10's came off the assembly line with gas caps painted to match the body color? Not sure on this one. Most I see are SS or chrome. Thanks, Mitchell

That's an interesting question. I seem to remember seeing body color gas caps way bak when I was a kid. I think it was one of the "high end" accessories that became the norm for after market manufacturers, because of its popularity.

The cap was part of the trim options. Base trucks got painted body color. I think if a base truck got side trim option the cap would be bright, but not 100% sure.

My Dad's 68 GMC 910 had a painted cap. And painted grill. And painted hubcaps. And now that I think about it, other than stainless trim, no chrome at all!

Most get replaced due to leaking around turns, that's why you'll see most of our trucks with the SS caps. My '67 had/has the painted OE cap, but I changed it out immediately when I drove it home for the first time. If I can get a gasket that'll work, it will go back on, till then it's at home in the glove box

I still use the painted cap on my maroon 67. Just don't fill up past 3/4's of a tank lol.

My Orange Chevy C/10 Stepside had a matching Orange gas cap. I was a kid when I bought this truck so I was careless and lost it, but not before I ran it over once.
The replacement caps are chrome.

So, looks like gas cap is still painted when trim is ordered. Looks like the gas cap goes with standard hubcaps. The trucks that come standard with chrome hubcaps will have a chrome gas cap
