Battery's

Hi
I was thinking of removing the battery from the engine bay
Then mount 2 6 volt battery's behind the seat.
Has anyone done this? I would put each battery in a battery box and
Secure it to the floor.
I have seen where people mout the battery under the
Bed or in the bed but I am not crazzy about eather location for different reasons.
If it is behind the seat it is out of site and protected form the engine heat.
What do you think?
Any down side?

The reason for putting in behind the rear axle is to improve the weight distribution. The con's are much longer larger cables to the starter and alternator. If your not racing the truck there really isn't a good reason to move the battery. In this day and age batteries are engineered to last a long time under the hood. I would highly advise against moving it inside the cab. If you move it inside you MUST have the battery bolted down inside an airtight box that is vented to the outside of cab. Batteries vent off dangerous fumes. Sorry to come on so strong but there is a real danger.

The cab is an unvented space, and lead-acid batteries produce hydrogen sulfide gas. I don't think it's advisable.

They aren't put in the cab of anything for a reason - and truckster's is a good one. But also, in the event of a crash, the last thing you want is a battery (or two) getting shattered about a foot behind your behind.

I thought it was pure hydrogen, as in the explosive kind. You'd probably have to charge the battery a lot to get an explosive mixture in the cab, but they're vented for that reason.

My Z06 has the battery in the passenger compartment (trunk/hatch area) but it's vented with a tube.

If you're getting gas fumes in your cab you need to replace your fuel lines. Your fuel system is designed so that no fumes are released into the cab.

If you designed a battery box that was sealed and vented to the exterior it might be a worthwhile project, but what gain would there be from all that work? Maybe if you're building your truck for autocross, but then why not just mount the battery in the bed?

Hydrogen is a normal product of charging a lead-acid battery, and becomes explosive at about a 4% concentration. That's not the big concern - any overcharging of the battery induces sulfur to bond to the hydrogen, producing hydrogen sulfide, which is an extremely poisonous gas. And if you're running a mechanical voltage regulator you're likely to get some overcharging periodically. Is it a huge risk? I don't know, but I don't see any benefit from running the risk.

I'd like to know the reasoning unless its so you can sit with the vehicle off and listen to the radio longer...
