water pump bearing

i have a issue when my truck is cold first starts up it makes a chirp noise like a dry bearing or rubbing noise, then goes away after 5 mins started.

this the sign of a wearing out water pump bearing?

may need to replace it anyway come summer

this unit here looks like it will do just fine.

Re: water pump bearing

noise sounds like it's coming from this area

or could it be the fan clutch?

Re: water pump bearing

I think you've got another problem besides the water pump; probably the fan clutch or one of the idler bearings. When the water pump starts going bad you get some movement and leakage on the shaft. Look for leakage at the weep hole at the bottom of the water pump. That's a possible trouble indication. Take the fan belt off and spin/ rock all the spinning components in this area for looseness, roughness, including the alt. The alt. bearings have made the noise you're talking about in my personal experience of owning SBC-equipped vehicles for 40+ years.

the pulley tensioner and idler were replaced with new units. also new alternator.

so i suspect fan clutch or water pump bearing

yes i will go through and check for play and any roughness.

checked weep hole no leakage when i replaced radiator hoses.

i have a feeling its the fan clutch bearing , i will replace it all come summer.

thx for reply

Re: water pump bearing

I think I went through a couple of AC Delco water pumps when my truck was new. I found that unusual because I've seen a lot of them that have lasted as long as the engine. I've used Edelbrock water pumps almost exclusively since then in my trucks. I still use AC Delco in my LS engine but that's a different animal. My last engine swap I had 190K on the engine and the same on the Edelbrock wp. Since that time I've got 50K on this combo with no problems. But your question I think you should still be good unless you have some serious corrosion in your cooling system.
