1966 Chevrolet C20

Hi all,

i have recently bought this chevy pickup as a fun project i've wanted to do since a long time. With values of nearly all classic cars off the chart (for now) i couldn't resist the incredible value for money proposition! :-)

It's a 1966 Chevy C20 fleetside long bed w matching 327 & 4 speed with what i understood is the "custom camper" option combo. vin C2546Z169###

Here in Belgium the expertise is rather limited on this type so i'm hoping to learn a bit more about e.g. non-original modifications etc. I've put new floors / sills / lower a pillars in as well as a lot of electrical work as the wiring and most of the switches, volt regulator were really messed up.

The engine runs ok, it actually starts really well, but probably needs more attention as it is not very powerful.

As you can see on the pictures the cab is leaning back i still have to replace the rear cab mounts with the C10 type instead of the weird current ones. The bed side trim is back on.

i puzzled together most of the build sheet found under the seat...

There is still some rust at the top of the windshield and also on the dash. It also needs a new wooden floor i should be putting in soon.

Welcome PJ. Nice looking truck. Lots of information on here. Just ask or check the FAQ section. Some of the members from Europe could help with sourcing parts. What are your plans for the truck restore or hot rod?

Re: 1966 Chevrolet C20

thanks. i'm looking for originality so it will be more a resto job. i'm not going to touch the paint even though it's really poorly done by some previous owner.

Also i'm wondering is it possible to have had 3 fuel tanks? on the transmission tunnel there is a switch from the underside of which one line goes to the fuel tank and 2 others lead to nothing under the bed floor.

When i took out the front cab support U beams i noticed a beer can of miller used to actually support the filler used to patch the floor. quality stuff :-) i kept the can as a reminder :-)

BELGIUM!! I can't find one of those in Texas!!
Nice find, welcome to the board.
Yes, 3 tanks possible. Cab + 2 saddle tanks. Usually means cutting the bed for doors, but some wheelwell filler tanks are available. That is what the floor switch is for - manual fuel tank flow diverting. Does nothing for the fuel gauge.

Welcome to the forum PJ

Some of your lack of power issue could simply be the engine needs a tune up including setting the timing and maybe a carburetor rebuild.

Re: 1966 Chevrolet C20

Belgium you say? Cool!
I enlarged your shot of the build sheet as much as I could looking to see if the Z81 option is listed, but I could not see it. That is the code for the "Custom Camper" option.
Kind of odd, but it appears you have all the separate options that would be part of the Z81 package(and more), but the option code and hence Custom Camper designation is not there (that I could see).
By the way, the Custom Camper option had no particular engine and trans combo that went with it. You could order a six or an eight, mated to a manual or an auto.

Re: 1966 Chevrolet C20

indeed Z81 is not on the paper, strange

I also ordered an orginal rear bumper as the one on it now is just not a clean look.

I reckon that trailer hitch will not work with the original bumper am I right?

Sadly, with shipping & customs the cost of parts from the US is more than twice what it would be for you guys :-/
