350 Vortec to 454 vortec
I tried searching all day but it's a pain on an iPhone. I have a tired 350 in my 99 crew cab, and local junkyard has a 99 3500HD with a good running 454. Some places I've read said it was pretty much plug and play, others said it was a total nightmare. I know the ECM wiring should be the same, just dunno bout connectors and what not. Gonna stay with auto for now. I can get the whole truck for $1500, 454, NV4500, clean title and body. Plus later on down the road, I wanna build this truck up...

Re: 350 Vortec to 454 vortec
I highly doubt its a total nightmare. Its same generation, same setup basically. Should be tons easier then an LS swap and people do those all the time.

Re: 350 Vortec to 454 vortec
Since they are basically the same truck, can't see why it would be so difficult. Also since they are both 3/4-1 ton, the wiring should be the same from the ECM. Found out from last couple 1/2 tons that tho ECM might be the same the wiring coming out of it is different. I'm gonna go look at it again this weekend, go from there...

Re: 350 Vortec to 454 vortec
Put money down on it so it won't go anywhere. After talking to owner bout it, I think it's the clutch or hydraulics and not the tranny. He tried to move it, and couldn't get it to into gear, or once in gear to get it back out. He had to shut it off to go in/out. But after he pumped the clutch couple times, I get it when in and out. For what ever reason the bell was replaced, so thinking maybe they screwed something up, or the throw out bearing or slave is bad.

Re: 350 Vortec to 454 vortec
I have toasted a manual tranny and it was easy to tell with the car off that it was toasted. Sounds clutch related. Sounds like a good deal. A Vortec 7.4 and 4500 trans are both $$$ to get a hold of.

Re: 350 Vortec to 454 vortec
I've had 454s, one Vortec and it was a beast. All stock too. Only had 1 stick truck and that was a carbed 454 4-speed, and an absolute blast to drive. So this would be nice in my crew. I'm thinking something stupid as well, just wish I could do something soon with it, but have no garage to do anything!!! I could prolly sell this truck even with no motor, there is no rust on it. And being from NY, that's rare!!!!!
