BFG bent my backing plates

Sooo guys I have been working towards learning more about the inner workings of the truck. I refuse to take my truck to a shop now when a few months ago I would take it for anything. This has its problems.

I was trying to pop the upper ball joint out with my BFG. I mean I was swinging this hammer. My aim was on 3/4 or less and my BFG hit the backing plate and well it is bent bad to be honest both of them are bent. I did not learn from the first mistake and bent them both.

I need to find new ones in a hurry. I have looked everywhere online including the archive of this forum.

Does anyone know where I can get 2 new front backing plates for a 69 online?

Re: BFG bent my backing plates

You can just take them off if they are rubbing. No biggie...

As for new ECE carries them.

I know what B F means, but what does G mean. Usually it's BFH

Re: BFG bent my backing plates

well bending the backing plate was bad but I did not even get the acronym right. I added a g not h. I really bent these thing up. If I want to replace them do I have to buy them used or do they sell them new online? I am going to sell it when this is done. I found another one local that I want to buy it is more of a driving project.

x2 - if the BFG bent them one way, maybe the BFH can bend them back? Lay it on a piece of wood and get after it! Or just take it off. No big deal to run without them if you're talking about disc brake backing plates.

Re: BFG bent my backing plates

You cant run without backing plates on a drum brake truck, which is what a '69 would be. I would try hammering them back, surely you didn't bend them that bad??

Re: BFG bent my backing plates

Yes they are drums and I will say it resembles mini tacos. I was going to get the new ones but I will try to fix them. I have to get new UCA & LCA, springs and shocks. I bought the new ball joints, tie rods, idler and pitman.

Re: BFG bent my backing plates

These parts must be out there, but I'm with those who say they can (usually) be hammered into useable shape. How about posting a couple of pics, so we can see, and hopefully learn from your mistake.

Re: BFG bent my backing plates

If you are unable to hammer them back into shape as many drum to disc conversions as I read about on here surely someone close to you has some drum front plates that you could get on the cheap. But if not now may be the time while it is that far apart to do a disc conversion up front.
On a side topic why do you need upper control arms and lower control arms and if your getting them used doesn't that guy have some backing plates he could throw in for you?. With all that needed you could think of the conversion and use 73-87 stuff then your ball joints [and steering pieces] would cost you less. Good luck.
Oh and on a side side topic, if your fixing something fix it like you are gonna own the truck form now on, They have been butchered and patch enough. Even though I build to sell[mostly later stuff99-07's is what I do now] I build every one like I or my wife or children will drive it from now own. That way I can assure if and when it does sell that that person be be confident in it. That has held me and my business name in good stead for almost 30 years now. Jim

** The UCA,LCA - have a bunch of rust and I want the new owner to understand this is not pieced together. I bought the moog kit that has all the ball joints, tie rods, idler and pitman etc. Then after removing things I decided things need to be replaced. The guy wanted a bunch to blast all these items wanted far too much I believe. This is the main reason that I am trying to keep the drums.

I am also trying to save a truck from being hacked up so that is why I am selling mine. I also want a more options such as A/C and a BBC. Mine has a SC and is fun.

Re: BFG bent my backing plates

Check a Hollander Interchange manual to see what years are the same for the backing plates. You will need to know what size the shoes are and whether they are 5, 6 or 8 lugs. You may get lucky and find them being used on dozens of years.

I thought the same. If the ball joint is still firmly pressed in place, you can go rent a ball joint press at your local AutoZone or Advance Auto. Much easier than that BFH.

Re: BFG bent my backing plates

I got them out with no problem after I hit the pickle fork instead of the backing plate. I have a press. I also bought a puller but it is the wrong one in the box when it was delivered.
