2000 GMC 3500 454 / 4L80E no reverse
All,
I recently bought a 2000 GMC 3500 dually. Nice truck in overall good shape but the transmission appears to have lost reverse (barely moves). It shifts perfect in all forward gears. It appears to be a new car trade, clearly a Texas truck as all the service records were neatly kept in a Whataburger bag. Is a complete tear down in order or is there something I should look out before sending it to a transmission shop. Thanks |

Re: 2000 GMC 3500 454 / 4L80E no reverse
I know that there will be people who disagree with me but that happened with my 1997 3500. I had to have it rebuilt three times. in 5 years. I know some people love the 4L80E but if it were to go out again I will buy a remanufactured one and not bother taking it to a trans shop. We just replaced my sons trans in his 08 GMC Arcadia with a trans from Street smart trans in Florida. They shipped it, we swapped it and sent it back. Easy.....

Re: 2000 GMC 3500 454 / 4L80E no reverse
I've known reverse to go out due to a simple sensor. It didn't happen to me but to a friend who is a very good mechanic.
I had the 4L80E in a '91 Suburban go into limp mode less than two weeks after I bought it from a dealer. It was freshly rebuilt by AAMCO. Well, not fresh, because they wouldn't honor their warranty because the job was over 6 months old...with less than 100 miles of use on it. The dealer was great. This was a 30 day 50/50 warranty and they took care of this whole bill. They had the local Chevy dealer rebuild it to the tune of $1,300. Then, a couple months later it goes into limp mode again. I have a friend scan it and it pointed toward the VSS, which there are two of. I bought both, put them on, and never had another issue. Makes you wonder how many electronically controlled transmissions get rebuilt when the issue is a simple sensor replacement. It would explain why a transmission would need repeated rebuilds in short time

Check all the wiring. Mine went into limp mode once because I pulled the heater fuse, and at least in early years, GM had used it to scavenge power for the shift controller. If they still had a DRAC in 2000 check it out thoroughly, I never trust complicated electronics as executed by GM :/
