Stock Exhaust Questions

So, my stock exhaust on my '86 (305) has a single pipe (approx 2.5" dia. - I didn't measure) coming off the y-pipe, through the cat and into the muffler. From the muffler it has two smaller tailpipes (approx 2") running to the back and out the side just behind the left rear tire. I assume they did this to "simulate" a dual exhaust?

I need to replace the muffler after one of the tailpipes actually rusted right off this last weekend (scared the crap out of me when it fell and hung there banging on my rotating u-joint until I could stop ). I have a fairly new muffler I took off my doner truck and have stored. The inlet pipe is the same size (I think), but it only has a single tailpipe.

So this "single" exhaust is fine with me. And I assume that the reduction to a single pipe should not be a performance issue - any thoughts?

Also, what do you guys do for exhaust hangers. The existing ones are in bad shape and likely in the wrong location anyway. I'll probably use strapping temporarily, but thought I'd get some thoughts here as well.

Thanks,

You're right in that this was to simulate "true" dual exhaust. If you run 2.5" minimum out from the muffler you may notice a little difference but nothing to really hurt it. Just make sure to run the same size as a minimum. On the hanger my muffler shop used a flat piece of metal about 1/2"-3/4 " wide and bent the end to drill and mount a poly bushing to the frame. Then welded the other end to the pipe coming out of the muffler.

Thanks Crackajacka,

Thanks for the suggestion/offer, but my intent, at this time, is simply to put a single muffler and tailpipe on and get rid of the fake dual exhaust.

That's for now - who knows what the future holds...

my 86 had the same problem witht he exhaust i went to napa and got everything from the engine pipe back for $58. napa sells the bent pieces of metal that clip into the rubber pieces ont he frame and its held up by the exhaust clamps. oh yeah the pipe is 2 1/2" at the engine pipe and 2" after the muffler

Autozone also has several types of hangers that work on our trucks.

My Sub had a single pipe on it when I bought it. Running over a Jeep driveshaft on the Interstate a few years later meant getting a new exhaust. The shop put on a factory-style 2-pipe deal after the muffler. I didn't see any difference. However, when I put on a Flowmaster Delta Flow 3-chamber muffler about 3 years ago, I noticed a pickup in power-- and tone...

Thanks for all the input Guys.

As I implied earlier, this repair is a "quick and dirty" solution for now (before our house move, and then parking the truck for the winter). I assume the exhaust system will need work at some point in the future, at which time, I may want to go with a better setup. But for now...

So I went out to Canadian Tire last night and picked up some pipe sections, clamps and the like to effect the repair. I noticed that they have a number of different after-market hangers in stock as well - so we'll see. This Saturday's project.

Thanks again.
