1500 hd ?

Hi all need your help. Trying to help a guy with choosing the correct spindles for his truck. I have seen there are two different spindles for the 2wd GMT 400 trucks.

The only thing I know is that he have a 91 1500 2WD 5 lug truck, as of now I donīt know which cab and bed. He is claiming he have an HD truck but I doubt there ever was such a thing. I have seen 1500 HD but only 99 and up and those were 8 lug.

Was there ever a 1500 HD truck during the 88-98 period?

Maybe he is just refering to the two different type of spindles as being light duty vs heavy duty.

Thanks

Re: 1500 hd ?

Most 1/2 ton gvws were 6,000-6,200. There was a f44 rpo code that was available on 1/2 ton trucks and it had 7,200 gvw. It wasn't marketed as "hd".

The light duty 3/4 ton had the same 7,200 gvw where the heavy duty had 8600.

The first year for the 1500hd was 2001, and it had a gvw of 8600.

Re: 1500 hd ?

Thank you 95 for reply.
You answer confirms what I was thinking about a 88-98 1500 HD existence.

My friends problem was he had bought new drop spindles for his truck but they turned out to not fit.

I have learned that there are two different spindles for 88-98 2wd 1500 trucks. 4" shaft spindle for 1" disc brakes and 4.5" shaft spindle for 1.25 disc brakes.
The 1" discs were used on 88-91 reg cab trucks (except 454SS) and all other 88-98 2wd 1500īs used the 1.25 discs.

I have also seen that the two different spindles sometimes refers to light duty vs heavy duty, that is probably the reason he says his truck is a HD truck.
So probably he bought the 4" spindles but what he really need is the 4.5" ones.

It was just for marketing. It was the only crew cab truck with a 1500 badge for a couple of years.

Everything about the truck is 3/4 ton except the badges.

Re: 1500 hd ?

'88-'91 1500 2WD regular cabs used the "light duty" spindles. Light duty means the axle pin is a smaller diameter (1" I believe, it's been a long time), so it uses different bearings and rotors.
All other '88-'91 1500 2WD trucks and ALL '92-'98 1500 2WDs used the "heavy duty" spindles with a larger axle pin (1.25").

That is basically what I have found also when looking at Summit and other vendors. What they usually refers to are the lenght of the shaft, 4" or 4.5" and the thickness of the disc, 1" or 1.25". Havenīt seen they refers to the diameter of the pin but that is easy to remember since it seems to be the same dimensions as the disc thickness.

Now that I looked in to this I know which spindles to look for for my 92 Sport truck. Planning on doing a 2/4 drop on it some time.

Thank you all for your help.

Re: 1500 hd ?

I'm glad I read this thread. Always learning. I knew there was a light duty 2500 in these years, but all those were 6-lug. So, no designated 1500HD, but in '92 went to heavier parts on all the C1500s
