I want to swap my steering column on a 78 from man. to auto but was wondering on the socket on the frame for a man. tranny is on the bottom of the frame and on a auto the socket for the shift mech. is on the top of the frame. Will it still work on the bottom socket.I can,t see anyway I can drill holes in the upper frame to put in a new socket

I am not sure about the socket you are talking about but the columns are interchangeable as long as you have the intermediate shaft that matches the column. There is no drilling required. The squarebody columns either have a a splined lower shaft or a double d lower shaft.

It,s a socket on the frame about where your left foot would be but under and has a spring loaded arm which then attaches to the long shifter rod that goes to the tranny. sorry I can,t find a pic and I don,t know what the parts are called

well 2 problems.My 2 wheel dr. blazer was a 4 speed so there is no socket in the frame rail and the column in the blazer is splined and I had bought a D shape column from a swap meet last spring.AARG
