Shift happens
So yesterday morning while I was on my way to school. I had parked my truck and was putting it into park and heard a loud pop/bang and I broke the ball off the end of the shifter. Usually its a little tough to take it in and out of park when its a little cold out. So I've got 2 questions now 1. are repop shifters any good and 2. whats the best way to get the broken ball out of the column?

If you have a telescoping magnet you may be able get it out with that. Why is the shifting mechanism so stiff? Shouldn't be hard to shift an automatic unless something is in a bind.

I would put money on a worn parking pall. This would allow the truck to move slightly putting pressure on the mechanism making it hard to shift out of park. Most tranny shops don't replace those parts unless they are broken or noticebly worn.
I would try a small magnet to fish what is left of your shifter out of the column. |

I just removed a broken ball in my column, came right out with one of those telescoping magnets. When you put a new lever in spray wd-40 in the column above the bowl and in the shifter hole to lube it up. Do the same on the engine side while prying the shift lever away from the detent plate. The shift column slides on those 2 areas and it needs lube.

The inside of your column needs to be cleaned out. 40+ years of dust have built up inside and gummed it up to the point it won't move any more.
This could be a motivator to get a new tilt unit. |

*UPDATE*
I had a little extra time to kill today after I got home from school and decided to fish the remains of the shift lever and the majority of the plastic bushing.
