Need an everyday tire reccomendation

The tires on the 71 are like plastic, they are in need of replacement. We do use the truck around the house so it gets in the grass and dirt on occasion, so thinking about something with a more robust tread. The truck has 15x8 rally wheels on it. Discount Tire has Goodyear Wranglers in a 235/75/15 for $79 each - any thoughts?

This thread could turn into a "brand wars" thing--I hope not. On my 98 Silverado, I have Michelin LTX in the same size. After about 2 years of use, they are wearing well, have decent grip, and look good. They came from Costco, but I cannot remember how much they cost.

Although they say M & S on the sidewall, I don't think they'd be very good in the mud. They were just OK in the snow here this winter.

BTW, I always buy online, pay the shipping, pay for mount/balance and still usually come in just over 100 dollars saved over purchasing them at a local shop. The last time I did this, Firestone had a brick and mortar sale locally that would have been almost the exact same price, but that is rare.

Disclaimer: I'm usually buying 275/40/18 or 255/35/18 or 2X5/40/20 so the smaller 15 inch tires may have a different pricing profile and so YMMV.

Nothing wrong with Goodyear Wranglers. They will probably be nosier than a highway tread, but will work fairly well off-road and in snow.

If you want to go a little wider, 255-70x15 is the same height and fits your 8" wheels very well. These are Cooper Cobras, which cost around $95 each 20 months ago. They are white letter on one side.

I used to buy from tirerack when I worked at a shop. I had access to a tire machine, balancer and got a shop discount. Now Discount Tire has gotten more competitive with their pricing. When you figure shipping/tax etc. it comes out real close.

I do as well. But the Radial T/A has gotten pretty pricey in the last few years. I was looking to put a new set on my Corvette it was going to be over $600

Dang. I bought these last year from discount tire for right around $400 installed. Check the sizes, certain sizes are much more $ than others! They may have been an "uncommon" size and more $. A 235/70-75/15 should be a common, cheap size.

Edit: I must have gotten a good deal, I priced them out at DT online and was right at $600... wtf?

Man, that was a good price! When I bought my Cooper Cobra tires back in spring of 2015, the BFG Radial T/As were $140 each plus tax, balancing, etc, etc. So approximately $650 out the door. Size was 255-70x15.

I have run nothing but radial T/As on old cars and trucks since the late 1980s, but no more. The Coopers handle just as well, if not better. A little bit stiffer ride, but better planted in turns, I think.

I get emails from them once or twice a year with ridiculous sales... I could have used one of those. A couple years ago I got a $900 set of tires for my wifes 2011 Mustang for like $650 installed. I think each time I had to buy through their ebay store, have them "shipped" to my local store and installed. PIA but can save a lot of $ sometimes.

I have 17" coopers on my 65 Mustang. They're a good tire. It's been on the HRPT 3 times for a total of 9K+ miles over 3 years, including a crap load of rain.

I have the Goodyear Wranglers on my S-10 Blazer and they are wearing well, and have good traction in the snow.
Can't beat that price. The selection of 15" tires out there has been dwindling lately.
I think the 235/75/15 might be a little narrow for an 8" wheel.
