Ididit Column Install
Hey all,
Has anyone else installed an Ididit steering column or Flaming River style? I have loosely put mine in to get an idea of how the column wiring harness will be routed and the possibility of notching the support bracket to clear the wiring. I am interested in what others have done to secure the column. The original column had 2 bolts that held the top end in place but the new Ididit column does not have provisions for that. Did anyone forgo the factory support bracket and use a column drop? Looking for ideas... Thanks much... Randy |

Re: Ididit Column Install
I see....mine is a generic column and only has the provisions for the turn signal lever, hazard button and tilt lever. I may have to fab a healthy strap to hold it up against the top of the bracket.

Re: Ididit Column Install
If you don't have the retrofit series you might want to check the fit of the steering wheel, specifically the horn contact that goes through the wheel and is contacted by the horn ring. You may find it is too long.

Re: Ididit Column Install
I just ordered one today for my 62. Reed 62 is yours for our year trucks? I hope I don't have to modify anything, I just want it to go in.

Re: Ididit Column Install
Randy,
Maybe this will help. This is how I installed a 72 Chevy tilt Van column in my 64. I don't know if you can tell or not but I left the factory 72 van wiring underneath the column it the factory flat plastic conduit though it is painted to match in my picture. It clears the 64 E brake bracket without pinching just fine. Scroll down to post #4 to see how I did it. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=711779 |

I ordered a generic column so it didn't have any holes or provisions to do an R and R style swap. I will have to do some fabbing I believe to secure it. The fitment is fine, it just doesn't have any threaded bungs to hook it up to the stock brackets. |

Thanks 64shortbox, I will check it out. I am not looking at a very difficult situation, I will just have to do a little work to make sure it is secure and functional. |

Re: Ididit Column Install
Do you remember which Ididit column you used?
Did you drill the holes in the column yourself? Did you use a stock steering wheel? How long is the column?

Re: Ididit Column Install
It's the Ididit Retrofit column for our trucks. Mine is the older model that did not come with the adjustable threaded mounts, so I had to drill and install nutcerts - I used the 4 mount holes in the handbrake mount. I see a lot of others just use two fasteners in the forward attachment slots of the column/handbrake mount. This is my steering wheel that uses the deluxe hub:

Re: Ididit Column Install
I thought the factory steering wheel didn't fit on the ididit columns. I would love to fit my deluxe steering wheel if possible.

Re: Ididit Column Install
The splines should be the same.
