Re: Can anyone ID this diff?
How many bolts in the cover and how many lugs dose it have? Looks like something that came out of 60 to 72 chevy truck depending on the Lugs. The pumpkin looks kind of small in that picture, but it could just be the angle.

I have an idea... but just get him to turn it and take a pic of the back. We'll know immediately.

Re: Can anyone ID this diff?
Looks like one out of a 4wd. Almost looks like it has the bigger brakes on it.

Re: Can anyone ID this diff?
Here are some more pics. I have a feeling this is way newer than what Im looking for...
Also, I found another rear end thats out of a 66 GMC Suburban. The guy that has it says its not a 12 bolt though. What other options did the GMC Suburban have?

Re: Can anyone ID this diff?
I think it may be from an 80s truck, which would make it too wide for my 61...
Still wondering what the 66 GMC Suburban would have if its not a 12 bolt....

Re: Can anyone ID this diff?
That's your basic 12-2 Alpha Delta Charlie right there. Basically.

Re: Can anyone ID this diff?
The phrase is "your basic 12-2 Alpha Delta Charlie".
Whatever I want it to mean. In this case, I'm clueless as to what the rear end is.

Re: Can anyone ID this diff?
Does the 61 also have leaf springs? Spacing? What about U joint match up?
I have a 1970 (or 71?) 12 bolt in my 66 and like it that it is 1 1/2" wider than original. |

Re: Can anyone ID this diff?
That differential IS a truck 12 bolt. It will be 1.5" wider than your original Eaton HO32/33. If it is 6 lug it will have been out of a 4x4.
A GMC will likely have a Dana 44 as already stated. Personally I would stay away from the Dana 44 as the brake drums are basically nonexistant and you have to modify other drums to make them work.

Re: Can anyone ID this diff?
Thanks for the replies!!!
I found a local diff shop that will rebuild my stock rear and put 3.90 gears in it for $500. I am debating going this way. A newer 12 bolt would be nice, but between the price of the rear end and the work moving mounts and pan hard, maybe the $500 isn't too bad...

Re: Can anyone ID this diff?
3.90 gears haven't been made for years. A set of nos ones on e-bay are $495 just for the ring and pinion. Have them put in 3.38"s as they are ave.

Re: Can anyone ID this diff?
he has 3 sets of 3.90 gears at the shop. He is throwing a set in for free basically with the rebuild. If I want 3.38, then I have to buy a set.
I have a 700r trans, so 3.90 should be fine... Do you guys think I should just rebuild what I have for $500 and not worry about looking for a rear end?

Re: Can anyone ID this diff?
Keep your stock rear housing and have it built.

Re: Can anyone ID this diff?
The biggest downside of the stock rear end is not being able to get a Posi for it. But I guess don't really need one...

Re: Can anyone ID this diff?
I don't know about the earlier stuff but if you already have a 12 bolt, couldn't you swap the axle shafts out from a 65 or 66 to run a posi?
Is it more than a coarse vs fine spline difference on the 61 diffs? |

Re: Can anyone ID this diff?
60-62 were Eaton rear ends. Not 12 bolts. I wish it was that easy....

Re: Can anyone ID this diff?
Go for it at that price. I looked for a set of 3.90 gears with no luck when i did mine. With your trans you should be fine with the 3.90's. these gears new nos?
