Motor Swap?

OK, I've got this motor....

And this transmission....

Motor is an ~03 I think. 5.3 fairly low miles. Transmission is a mid nineties 4L80E. I think from a 4wd.

I'm thinking about putting these two together in my '75 Blazer. It's gonna have to be cheap though.

I've got several questions.
Will the 5.3 PCM (which I don't have) control the earlier generation 4L80E?
Is there a better (ie. Megasquirt, etc) controller for a budget to control both?
The engine and trans will bolt together with a crank spacer, correct?
What will I need as far as keeping the 4wd? I'm not completely opposed to keeping the fulltime, but if changing can be done cheap enough I want to look into it.

I know a big chunk of these questions could be answered by searching, but this way I can keep it all in one place.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Re: Motor Swap?

That's a 2wd trans in the pic. It has a 2wd tail-shaft housing w/a yoke.

A 4wd would need to have the adapter in place for a transfer case w/1 yoke going toward the front & the other to the rear.

Building a small, high rpm engine with the perfect bore, stroke and rod ratio is very impressive.

Re: Motor Swap?

That's a 2WD transmission. The 5.3/4L80 combo won't be a bad one, but just so it's been said - if your skill level is such that you don't know the difference in transmissions, you should probably do a lot of keyword searching on this board and others before you even get into the details of your own build. Getting those two components to running/driving status in a '75 truck is far from a beginner task.

Re: Motor Swap?

I don't have any doubts in my skill level of doing the swap, only in my skill level of 4wd and automatics. This is the only one I've ever owned.

I've done a couple LT1/T56 swaps in the past.

You can convert the tailhousing to the 4wds one, right? Is this 80E specific or will the 60E work?

Yes, the 4wd specific parts cans be swapped over.

Re: Motor Swap?

You need to either adapt your harness to control the 4L80E or you can buy a adapter harness.

But yes it will control it just fine.
