Folding seat

I'm thinking of moving gas tank to the rear of the truck (69) and would like to have my seat fold forward. Do the 67 and 68 both fold? Has anyone figured a way to make the 69-72 seat fold? I hate to have to buy another seat and have it recovered if I don't have to.

Re: Folding seat

There's a bolt on the passenger side, bottom, corner hinge that you can take out but you have to modify your cover slightly. if you do remove it, fold the seat forward and put the bolt back in so the seat will have it to rest on when upright. Without the bolt there at all, the seat back rests on the tank, if it's still there, or on the rear cab wall
in 68 they changed the bench seats to non-folding for safety regulations, In 73 to late models they made them folding but with a securing latch.

I did this on my 72 but used a small piece of angle iron and drilled a hole in it , countersunk the hole and used a flathead, countersunk screw, seat rests on the angle iron , not the bolt.....I would post pics but have a he%^ of a time doing it....I can text or email pics, let me know

Re: Folding seat

On the seats that are being modded to fold be very carefully folding it forward the first time.
If your not you might tear/rip your cover on the sides.

Re: Folding seat

El Dorado Jim, Thanks again for the pictures. Not to ask a silly question, but I'm currently in Florida so can't go out and look at my truck. While Cherokee John stated the bolt was on the right side, you show it on the left. Would there by any chance be one on each side? Either way I'm so happy that I will be able to fold the seat foreword. Thanks again for the information.

Re: Folding seat

you guys are welcome, I removed the in the cab tank and installed an aluminum box I found at a swap meet,it locks and came with two inserts, one for tools and one for long guns, it was originally a tailgate box, I googled it, they work great behind the seat....

Re: Folding seat

I cant find the box that I used on google images, don't think they are made anymore, I will post pics if you guys want to see it? there are lots of different storage racks that go behind the seat but none that have a door on it...you could make your own lockable cabinet out of wood...

Thanks, I figured there had to be a bolt or two on each side. Any pictures of storage boxes you could show us would be great.

Re: Folding seat

That is a cool mod El Dorado Jim!

My new seat foam is a tad too fat and I was going to trim it down some, this would be a cool mod to do while I'm at it.

As mentioned above it was all 67's and early 68's that had the folding seats. The new law required that in January 1968 all folding seats have a latch mechanism or become rigid. GM's cheap fix was to make them all rigid. That's why some 68's still had folding seats, they were built before the January 1968 deadline in late 1967.

Re: Folding seat

Here is a pic of the seat I have that is tore.
I got it this way so I really don't know what was done too it.

I do know there was nothing done too prevent the back from laying flat in reverse when its removed from the cab.

The sides rips are definitely from folding forward though.

I'm pretty sure this is a recover at some point since the patterns don't line up.
Perhaps the cover wasnt secured on the sides the correct way causing the rip?

Either way Besides a pencil poke and some fading is the only damage on a otherwise nice seat.
Been saving this one for my 71 k20 since it's a oe black on black truck.

Thought I would throw this out there too possibly keep someone else from having the same problem.
