dana 60 questions (gear ratio, posi, etc)
i have a dana 60 on my 72 3/4 ton, somebody wants to buy it, its 8 lug. how do i tell what ratio it is and if its posi or not? people ahve told me tricks about jacking up one tire and turing it, etc etc, i wanna know what a posi rearend looks like compared to a open. do i have to count teeth or is there markings on it that say the ratio. i can take cover off and post pics tomorrow. thanks, sean

The posi is called a power-lok in a dana of this vintage... would look like this inside the diff. Whwen lookign at the crown gear you will see numbers stamped on it... for example theres the typical part number and then say... a 41-10 doing the division math you know its 4.10 ratio. 41 divide by 10.

If you do decide to jack-up one tire and turn it and count the times the pinion turns and it wont, it's either seized up or you have a traction aid in there. On my truck w/ powr-loc I can't rotate one tire while the other is on the ground.

The easiest way to tell the gear ratio is to pull the cover and count the teeth on both the ring gear and the pinion gear. Then divide the number on the ring gear by the number on the pinion and this is your ratio. (e.g. 41 teeth on ring gear, 11 teeth on pinion=3.73 gear ratio.) As far as the posi goes jack up both sides and spin one wheel, if they both move you've got a locker.
