1967-1972 Steering Column in a 1964

I'm attempting to put a 67-72 column in my 1964 service truck. I'm going to try to use the original steering wheel, but for some reason there is an awful lot of play in the wheel. I can move it up an around freely.

Is there an adapter that can mate the two plugs together?

What's the deal with the dealer optioned emergency flasher?

Are you saying the steering shaft splines on the column are smaller than the splines in the steering wheel?
Or is the shaft itself moving around in the column?

Almost positive that M&H makes an adapter.

Bryan, one of the things that made me change to a 69 column in my 64 was the difference in how the turn signal canceling cam is. where it goes thru the steering wheel is off by about 60 degrees. If you are going to use the original wheel you may have issues with the horn/turn cam.

I ended up splicing in the 64 wire ends to my 69 column wire, then plugged it into my new dash harness. Most of the newer harnesses from what I have seen have a generic connector (similar to the ones shown in the M&H link) replacing the original style connectors.

I also liked when I swapped columns I also changed the shaft so it would be collapsible (69/79 intermediate shaft) in stead of the ole sper checker shaft, which I think is slightly smaller in diameter that the one from the 69.

I don't know about newer than 66 or 67 but the early ones needed a spring at the bottom of the column to keep the upper and lower bearings seated. Is your top bearing working as it should?

Good lord, who'd of thunk I'd have to spend $50 plus shipping on adapters to make a $50 steering column work. I should have gone tilt at this point.

You could have done like me and just cut the wires from the old column and spliced them into the 67-72 column harness. The colors match up so it isn't hard.

I was not there when my nephew had a mechanic friend of his swap in a 67 column. With that being said, I too asked about the wiring. He said they just repinned the 65 wires to the 67 plug in or something like that. I know he didn't need to buy an adapter plug.

I had a 72 tilt column put into my 65 Suburban, with a TH350, and was lucky enough to use my original deluxe steering wheel(the splines on the wheel and column matched). The only thing that doesn't work are the emergency flashers. I did have some issues of the tilt part coming a little loose after it was installed(1999), but the guy who installed it put some Loctite in there, and has been perfect ever since.
