250 with a 1 barrel carburetor carb needs help

Just put a brand new 1 barrel on and it started right up but was 'floored'. i can't get the linkage right. I adjusted the 'wide' screw on the side (throttle i thought) and now it won't start even. i have a couple of photos of the carb set up. if you are willing may i email 1 or 2 pics of it to you so you can help me diagnose? Thank you!!!! Scott
or... if i can post the pictures here let me know- i haven't figured out how

Re: 250 with a 1 barrel carburetor carb needs help

I looked at the photos again. There should be a bracket on the side of the carb held on by 2 screws that the return spring hooks to. It may have been left on the old carb.
I can't see a vacuum hose going to the choke pulloff. It needs a hose that will supply full manifold vacuum.

OK. Have you tried closing the throttle by hand? Get someone to start the truck and as soon as it starts, close the throttle (just move the carb shaft) by hand. You need to find a photo or diagram of the throttle linkage including return spring, as well as the choke linkages, including the vacuum line to the pull-off. Gotta be on line somewhere.

Your truck most likely has a Rochester Mononjet (M) carb. Simple little thing. I'd take it into the house, clear the dining room table off, and just take some time to figure out the linkage, while enjoying a cold one. Of course, if there's a wife in the picture, you want to make sure to do this while she's gone shopping.

Scott has a Roch. Mono-Jet with electric choke. Does someone know of a book that tells all about the Mono-Jet? The problem is The choke is not going off leaving the throttle on the high side of the fast idle cam.

Re: 250 with a 1 barrel carburetor carb needs help

I just checked the factory shop manual for our trucks (I have the 1969), and it's useless on the mono-jet.

Wonder if it is an electrical problem, maybe the ground for the choke is not complete?

Re: 250 with a 1 barrel carburetor carb needs help

Thanks for doing that
Its likely as the truck has no hookup for the choke
Pieces and parts,,,

Re: 250 with a 1 barrel carburetor carb needs help

Yet another reason to convert to a manual choke. Did that many times back in the 60s and 70s when all I could afford was old and worn out vehicles, where usually, nothing worked quite right.

If you do go manual choke, that mono-jet is soooooo simple.
