Truck ID help
I posted the truck when I first purchased it, but wanted to follow up now that I have a little more knowledge of these trucks after hanging out on the forum for a while.
I've got what appears to be a 3/4ton GMC 2500 4x4 with a V-8, th350, NP205, AC cab, Power steering, Power brakes, LWB. The truck has a cab with a vin the reads: CE149Z885524 and I pulled the frame partial vin that reads: 42Z109099 A few questions that I have: With a cab vin that says 1/2 ton 2wd truck is it most likely that someone just simply took the sheet metal off a 2wd truck and found a 1972 4x4 frame and did a swap? The bed has a fuel door but no fuel tank. Tank is still in the cab behind the bench seat. Any ideas what the bed belongs to. It also has the cargo door on the passenger side. The SPID is not readable. The title says chevrolet. Do both GMC and Chevy trucks say Chevrolet or did someone take the time to swap out all the chevy badges for GMC? Anything else you guys see feel free to chime in.

GMC vin tags read GMC, your cab is a chevy. Maybe... the vin rivets are not rosette rivets, tag may have been swapped.

Are the frame #s you're posting (42Z109099) on the side of the frame about where the cab & bed meet or are the up on top be the steering gear box? Those #s look the the ones on the side, if so they are part #s for the frame rails not the vin. (credit for that goes to a forum member, he's a GM truck engineer, can't remember his name but he's got a red shortbed square body)
I have a 71 GMC with no vin on the frame, I also have a 70 Chevy with the vin in the frame. I read in here somewhere that th GMC's did not have the partial vin but I don't know. I do know that the 4wd 3/4 ton GMC's had Dana 60 rear ends while the chevs had HO52's mine where that way(not sure about 72) I looked for a pic of my GMC vin tag, couldn't find one. I'll pot one up tomorrow. |

I just saw the pic if the vin & that is the partial vin. Ignore the above. The frame # should match the door tag.

with all that said, I wouldn't get too wound up about it. If it is registered & tagged, it is what it says. Many of these trucks are "parts / pieces" trucks. Both of mine are & to make matters even worse (better?) I'm taking the best of these two & making one!

You are correct. Partial vin in the picture came from driver side frame rail next to power steering pump.
I was under the impression that mine had D44 axles.

Should have a Dana 44 in the front, may have a Dana 60 rear or a HO52. Post a pic.

yeah, don't sweat that your truck is registered as a chevy, someone did a cab swap and more than likely a frame swap to make it a 4 wheel drive, it is registered and that's all that really matters....you have the big blue spicer hubs which are hard to find and expensive....very correct for your truck, dana 44 front end with either a dana 60 rear end or an eaton....and you have the best transfer case, the 205.. nice truck, if the registration bothers you, you can sell it to me...

The front if original will be a 44. I've seen Some of the K/20 chevys have the 60 rear as well but it's not very common. Most K/20 chevys got the ho52 rear. Ive only seen gmc get the 60 rear. Your truck is definitely a mut, however as said above if it's registered and your not worried about originality than no harm no foul. That tool box bedside is relatively uncommon and altogether rare if it doesn't have any rust. My door is perfect but under the door on mine is rusted out. You've got what looks like a solid start. Much better than most. The hole in the drivers bed side is intended for an auxiliary tank, not to replace the factory tank in the cab. Obviously it sounds like it's long gone

There may come a time that I decide to let it go but unfortunately I probably paid a little too much for it to begin with. In addition to that, I've already had to swap the engine and pull the T-Case for repairs. Well the engine was a lost cause but the T-Case just needed seals.
Good news about the hubs, I'll have to read up on them. Thanks for all the info gents. Truck is running good for now and I am enjoying it. Updated: I listed it on CL just to see what the interest level is at the I don't want to get rid of it price. It's a tough decision because I want to go another route and I can't have two. We will see what happens.
