1972 1 ton Wrecker
I'm starting a new project (as time and money allows). I purchased a 1972 C-30 1 ton cab and chassis to start with. I also purchased a 1991 GMC 1-ton roll back wrecker with a 454 5 speed. I also purchased a 2002 24 valve Dodge Cummins with a 5 speed transmission. My goal is to swing the 1972 cab/front end onto the 1991 frame which is already stretched with the aluminumn roll back wrecker bed and then install the cummins engine and transmission.

Re: 1972 1 ton Wrecker
Sounds like a great plan. I've yet to do a Cummins swap, but I remember when they came out thinking what great donor engines these will be. Now I see the day there will be more 12 valve Cummins in other vehicles than Dodges. Might already be true.

Re: 1972 1 ton Wrecker
I can't wait to see this one. I'm planning to swap a 12 valve into my K/20 a few years down the road.

Re: 1972 1 ton Wrecker
People need to add "Cummins" to "12-valve" when referring to them. I mean, a 250 is a 12-valve and so is a 292, and about any 6cyl out there. Don't mean to insult, but it just sounds ignorant to me, especially when these trucks came with 12-valves and they weren't Cummins diesels

I swapped a cummins "12 valve" into my 1970 k20 a couple of years ago...used a 1990 model 3/4 ton dodge for a donor..swapped in the Dana 60 front and 70 rear..has 3.08 gears and used the 727/205...one of my favorite trucks...had 4:56 gears,350, 4 speed and was only good for 6-7 mpg...now it cruises right down the road getting 16-17 mpg...

Re: 1972 1 ton Wrecker
I bought a rolled over 02 dodge 4x4 with a cummins in 03 & used the entire chassis under my 72 body. Been using it as my DD/work truck for over 13 years & very happy with it

Re: 1972 1 ton Wrecker
I'm just waiting for the right 12 valve truck to come up for sale so I can scoop it up. They are still pretty pricey for there age around here.

Re: 1972 1 ton Wrecker
This is the wrecker I bought for the frame and bed. It's a 1991 GMC 1 ton with a 454 and 5 speed manual transmission. The bed is a Century 17 foot roll back aluminum wrecker bed.

Re: 1972 1 ton Wrecker
I'm not sure of the difference it will make, I was going to install the cummins and make adjustments from there. I plan to do some research as well since I am planning to restore the 72 and make a classic hauler out of it, updating the front suspension with new parts.

Re: 1972 1 ton Wrecker
The 5.9 is about 500 lbs more than a big block. I'm sure you can come up with something,
