Project Cheyclone
So here it goes... another crazy idea I've had in my head for a while now. What would happen if you just so happens to have a 1991 syclone just sitting around for the past 20 years with a rebuilt title and a bent frame with only 29k miles. And a couple of square body c10's. You make a Cheyenne Syclone or a "Cheyclone".
No it won't be awd. But it will be very different from anything else. V6 turbo with 400 transmission and gear vendor. Pro touring suspension with coilovers. And yes I'm keeping the syclone seats because they are just that cool... bring on the ideas and comments!

Re: Project Cheyclone
I've always wondered how the syclone engine would push a full size truck around.

Re: Project Cheyclone
Will you be parting the syclone!? Curious how well a turbo 4.3 will be in a full size

Re: Project Cheyclone
Yes I'll be parting it out I'll post the stuff here in classifieds and eBay. This syclone has been in the family most of its life and I have an old time slip for 10.49 in then1/4. I know what mods it had but I'm personally shooting for 600 hp. The c10 should be close to the same weight within a couple hundred pounds. And having 6 speeds should make the go fast pedal fun

Re: Project Cheyclone
I have driven a 1992 4.3 gmt400 truck, and a 2012 Chevy work van with the 4.3. both of which would be heavier then a rcsb square body.
If you were putting along both felt like yes it has some power. Then you put your foot down, and the let down began. These were 100% stock, and I have heard with full bolt ones they work very well for DD. So I imagine a turbo with a decent gear set would be pretty awesome even if boost was kept low. Why not use a built 4L65E? It would give better control of the torque converter, and likely give an edge in hwy mpg. If that is important to you. |

Re: Project Cheyclone
I drive an Express 2500 van for work that's full of service parts etc. and with the 4.3L Vortec and it doesn't feel like it's even trying at 65-70 mph. It amazes me that 600 ponies can be had with a V6. Have fun with your interesting build. Subscribed.

Re: Project Cheyclone
I have to say that I am a little disappointed that you are not doing awd. It will still be cool though. I know that there is a lot of potential for the 4.3. I was building one for my s-10 years ago and found a lot of internal goodies at race car swap meets. A lot of lower level circle track series ran those motors.

Re: Project Cheyclone
Very interested to watch this. Always thought some engineer/hotrodder must have forged some signatures and pushed the Syclone/Typhoon through while the GM mgmt execs were at a management retreat or something. Any thought about building this in stages? Maybe hold onto the transfer case for stage 2 being awd. Stage 3 with a six-speed you-choose transmission (lose some weight and drive-train friction losses). Stage 4 with an independent rear suspension. Disregard my ideas if you like, it's all good to me. Just got me thinking. Whatever you do, this'll be cool.

Re: Project Cheyclone
Usually a lurker, but can't not comment on this one LOL
I love a square as much as the next guy, but in order to keep the AWD, I would start with '88-'98 short box single cab 4WD. The drivetrain would drop right into place. Not totally necessary, but I would convert to coilovers in the front to get the stance. Could also stay leafs in the back, but 4 link with coilovers would be cooler. Although not as cool as a Corvette IRS conversion. Dang - add another project to my bucket list. Have fun, will be watching any way you go. |
