L31 break in

I have an L31 crate engine nearly installed and was unsure what oil to use. It has the roller cam so I wasn't sure if I need a high zinc oil or not. Any good oils I can find at a NAPA? Also, any specific oil filter? Break in process?

Re: L31 break in

Technically you do not need a high zinc oil with a roller cam. However some still prefer to run a breakin additive for the initial breakin. I prefer ti use WIX oil filters. The typical breaking procedure of 2000 rpm for 20-30 minutes is mainly to breakin a flat tappet cam. Since you have a roller cam, that should not be necessary. That's my .02. This post probably should be in the engine and drivetrain section where the engine experts will see it and reply.

Re: L31 break in

When I did mine I just ran it about 20 minutes at 1500 rpm to let get up to temp and give the rings a chance to take a seat. I used a good quality 10-30 in it. Then I let it fully cool and went back and checked everything over and retightened the header bolts. Has 30000 miles on it now.
