tips/tricks to remove fuel tank selector switch?

Does anyone know of any tips/tricks to remove the in-dash fuel tank selector switch? I can't figure out how to get any tools or fingers behind the dash to enable me to remove the switch. I have a '79 K25.

Well,I have the exact same dilemma and this what I am going to do. I bought a new switch. There a couple of plastic tab which hold it. Break them by prying on the darn switch and be careful not to booger up the dash. Maybe a thin pry bar and a leaver base to protect the dash. You need a new switch anyway.

For the black switch on the dash? I removed my ash tray when I replaced mine, made the removal go much easier as I could reach through that hole to remove it.

Re: tips/tricks to remove fuel tank selector switch?

The ash tray removal might work, but, as I recall, I ended up removing the dash pad. I think the A/C duct work was in the way, but now that i think about it, it should be far enough away from the duct work to be accessible.

The last time I took the ashtray and its housing from the dash it did not go back in very nicely - the ashtray tends to stick out about 1/4."

BTW, I have been replacing that switch every few years now. I don't think the aftermarket parts are up to OEM quality.
